Greetings!

We come to the last module on fitness for awhile. Orange people are our target this week. As impulsive as Oranges tend to be, it's hard to beat them at fitness when they are deadly serious about it.

Thank you to those of you who are connecting me with folks in your office who want a workshop and earn a great vacation in Sedona.

Fitness for Oranges

Orange Cliff Climbing

At my Diet Styles workshop on June 15, we identified Orange personality plusses and Orange personality dangers. We have a better chance of getting fit by understanding which of our strengths to leverage, and which to worry about.

ORANGE PERSONALITY PLUSSES (Innate strengths to leverage)

  1. Oranges love to move and improve their bodies. Of the four Colors, Oranges tend to be more physically active. When it comes to diet and exercise, you can tell them that physical workouts count only 15-20 percent toward weight loss, but don't be surprised if they still choose workouts over nutrition - just because they see, feel, and enjoy working directly on the body. Success is even more achievable when physical activity is fun, varied, and/or competitive.
  2. Oranges are decisive. Oranges "just do it." They live in the moment and when they believe in the importance of something, they will act right away. Although they struggle to be consistent or committed for the long term, their natural decisiveness drives them to consistent action when they set up automatic daily triggers to stimulate them to enjoy in-the-moment decisions.
  3. Oranges love a challenge and will diet for high stakes. Yes, there is nothing like a big prize to offset the pain of dieting or doing grueling exercises. Competitive Oranges will win the fitness challenge for themselves by taking bets with friends, joining athletic teams, entering dance competitions, and signing up to online competitions that involve weight-loss wars on a grand scale.
  4. Oranges live to be confident, cool and "hot" to enjoy life even more. When you read fitness gurus who recommend envisioning a "new you," Orange people are totally up for that. Often their self-respect is tied closely to presenting the outside world with a physical body that is attractive, strong, powerful, sexy, and ready for action - to lead, to participate fully, and to win. You might guess that all Colors would relate to these values - and they do - but the notion of "hotness" is part of Orange DNA, no doubt about it.

ORANGE PERSONALITY DANGERS (Innate potential for self-sabotage)

  1. Oranges are easily tempted by what is directly in front of them. In-the-moment Orange people are the most likely to see an immediate opportunity as, well, immediate. They are known to be a little too impulsive and a little too spontaneous. Somebody gives them a fudge brownie. It's here, it's now, it's free - let's worry about calories tomorrow. Carpe diem. One great solution is to train to immediately to be mindful "in the moment." Be mindful with a list of quick and attractive alternatives to a fudge brownie. For example, image a vision of yourself as a hot, attractive person - next to an image of a truly undisciplined, fat slob. Have nuts or a delicious protein bar at-the-ready in a pocket or purse to substitute.
  2. Oranges love adventure risk-taking, and new things to have and do. "When it comes to food," says one friend, "I will try anything once. For me to do something, all you have to do is dare me." In the Orange world where both fun and personal freedom are kings, a fitness program has to have elements of fun, adventure, excitement, as well as some kind of freshness and immediate stimulation. The video (article below) illustrates this perfectly for an Orange tennis student who might slough off training if it weren't for the immediate gratification from the exercises.
  3. Oranges shy away from long-term commitments. Long-term commitments of any kind whatsoever often turn Orange people off. And that's because such pledges threaten the personal freedom they were born with. There are many ways to counteract procrastination due to commitment fears. Set up automaticity: appointments with a group or coach, partnering up with a housemate, committing to successive and achievable short-term goals (e.g., one pound this week only), buy clothing one size smaller to be worn in two weeks, volunteer to go on a fashion runway to raise money for a charity. You get the idea.

Four of the Orange folks who showed up at My Diet Styles workshop this month came up with the following list of ways to get fitter. Some items were expected; some were surprises. Have a look:

a)   Variety, different workouts

b)   Fun activity that makes you sweat

c)    Healthy foods

d)   Water

e)   Gardening - not just for exercise, but for connecting profoundly with the food you eventually ingest

Video: Perfect Exercises for Orange People

Sarah Bussault, host at Diet.com, found a perfect workout routine for her Orange self.

Oranges want fun, short, "in the moment", clearly goal-oriented exercises. Sarah wants to be a better tennis player. It's possible she'll be turned off by a gym routine far away from the tennis court. By combining exercises with hands-on tennis activity, she sees that everything she is doing directly impacts her game.

The actions themselves have a competitive aspect to them. Sarah's coach is also her playing partner. Simultaneously Sarah competes against her own record while getting a chance to see the results against an opponent - immediately!

Lately you read fitness experts extoling the virtues of interval training - a "best" guarantor of effective weight loss. And it's hard to beat tennis for interval activity, wouldn't you say?
