Greetings!

A fit America just has to be a better America. This is Week Two to focus on fitness - by temperament. We focus on the responsible Golds this week.

To help you on your own journey, click on this link and please do come to my free workshop on Diet Styles on June 16

It's easy for me to stay fit this week because miles and miles of beach lure me out of the room every single day here at Rocky Point, Sonora, Mexico. Heaven on earth! Wish you were all here. Seriously, I do!

Fitness for Golds

Gold workout

I stand in such awe of several of my Gold friends who have recently turned their bodies into photographable works of pride. What they have in common is they have chosen science-based programs to follow. In two cases, their diets were prescribed by doctors; in other cases, they invested in respected fitness gurus at their gyms.

Golds ask what is the right thing to do. They understand that somewhere, somehow the experts have created a program to follow that is both healthy and carefully planned. Of all the temperaments (Colors), Gold folks are naturally the most obedient - the most fervent followers - once they are convinced of the value of a program, ideology, or movement.

Colors guru Mary Miscisin says that Gold people crave consistency. The use of the word crave is not an exaggeration. Gold folks know in their hearts that things come out correctly and dependably in the end because of consistency. Thus they are hugely attracted to fitness programs with step-by-step instructions for each level of progress. They are not impressed with quick fixes or overly spontaneous suggestions. They understand that fitness is a long-term project with enormous challenges to take on. In sum, they say, "Tell me how to do it and I will follow, no matter how hard it is."

Successful fitness is intimately tied to who you are. For Golds, "who they are" is to be responsible citizens, workers, and family members - to always fulfill their obligations. Golds see themselves ultimately as the glue that holds society together - and that includes being as fit and strong as possible in order to consistently contribute to society. Whereas Orange temperaments tend to get fit to be some combination of "hot" and competitive, Gold folks aim primarily to be healthy and attractive - in order to play an effective role in the world they live in.

This final paragraph will end this fitness module each week: If we have not been successful with our own fitness programs in the past, maybe it's time to try to get fit by borrowing ideas from the other Colors. I know it's true for me (a Blue). The Green approach (last week) makes perfect sense to me and has been a key factor in getting me closer to optimal health. Both Green and Orange thinking work for me. Gold thinking seems logical to me, but grates against my freedom-loving, spontaneous nature. Have you noticed that so many commercial fitness products depend on Gold thinking? The reason is that 45% of the population is Gold. So what about you? What have you not tried before that might work for you this time?

Spontaneous Consistency?

This very short video could very well have been devised by a Gold person -- someone who would love to be spontaneous but who will plan even that -- in this case, with post-it notes!

Thanksgiving

You would think our natural strengths and values generally work in our favor, but such characteristics also work against us. Golds are no different. A consistent, rule-based life sounds like "the correct" life program, but sometimes consistency and rigidity can get in the way of a fitness program.

Gold folks tend to be bound to tradition. At Thanksgiving, for example, the new diet of protein and low carbs may be postponed for Thanksgiving week because - well, just because we've always had potatoes, gravy, apple pie, ice cream, and all that other stuff. It's a tradition. Grandma did it that way and so will we!

And what about that consistent, responsible fitness program of going to the gym during the lunch hour? Even such a noble pursuit can be derailed for reasons of "responsibility" - responsibility for getting work done for the team, taking care of children, meeting a deadline, etc. The fact is that Gold folks are very task-oriented and will tend to think of their responsibilities to the groups they belong to rather than the duties that have promised for themselves for their own health and fitness.

Finally, "consistency" can also come in the form of bad habits and old rules that really don't work well for a fit life. A list of old bad habits can be long and extra difficult to overcome, like watching several hours of TV with a spouse every single night, feeding the family dessert with every meal (even though the cook tries not to join in), or consistently choosing sedentary games over physical sports. And old "rules" can come back and bite you too, like "finish everything on your plate," "eat a big (and I mean BIG) breakfast," or "watch your pennies" (and end up being penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to investing in gyms, sports equipment, or training).

No matter what temperament we have, it's not a waste of time to question our basic values from time to time, especially those that might be hurting us. These values are innate and may be hard to question because they are part of our subconscious, and thus fiercely automatic.
