Greetings!

It's Holiday Time! The third article below will help you choose gifts for your loved ones -- by their temperament (Color).

If you missed email writing for Greens, Golds, and Blues, look up the last three issues in the archive.

Do you know that each Color deals with stress differently? Check out Mary Miscisin's research on stress in the final article below. Please help her out if you can.

Next week, we begin a series for business people about perhaps the most important goal in today's economy, i.e., How to Rebuild Trust With Your Customers.

Better Orange Emails

Efficient and brief are words that describe some pretty typical Orange email messages. Punctuation may be optional. Twitter was designed for Orange people. One Orange friend said last week, "Jack, 132 characters are 120 characters too many."

My apologies to many of my Orange friends who do not fit the description below. This is definitely not an attempt to pigeonhole Orange people. It's just that, well, I deal with more than a handful of Orange colleagues and family members who might benefit from this take on some Orange writing.

Here are the last six email messages from my very Orange friend John:

1.    Will there be a board meeting

2.    Okie dokie

3.    What board meeting

4.    Could not get the 25th but got Sunday the 26th Griffith park ramada 9 + 10 with beer permit 11 to 5. Maybe send out eblast?

5.    We shall see

6.    wrong phone number 916-555-1612

On the positive side, I think readers of Orange emails, tweets, and text messages are grateful their Orange friends waste no time, communicate clearly and briefly, and act fast.

On the other hand, Blue readers can see Orange efficiency as rude. Green readers may wish for more clarity and completeness. Gold readers cringe at irreverence toward expected writing standards of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic etiquette.

Better Orange emails don't have to be much longer, but just a little cleaned up and "dressed up." Let's rewrite a few of the above messages.

1.    Lost my calendar, Jack. Will there be a board meeting? Thanks.

2.    Jack, the board reminder got me by surprise. I think I missed your invitation. Please resend info. Thanks.

3.    Phone number is the ad is wrong. Kindly change to 916-555-1612. Appreciate it. John

In sum, a couple of choice words and observance of basic standards warm up the messages: they will come off as friendlier, clearer, and more respectful. Meanwhile, let's all remain thankful for BRIEF and EFFICIENT!!!

I use the word grateful a lot when speaking of Oranges. Why not? Orange communication - as in this NASCAR promo on YouTube - is not only brief and to-the-point. It is predictably fun, exciting, artistic, fearless, and full of surprises.  Orange people populate marketing agencies, comedy stages, Presidential debates, talk shows, sports events, and most all entertainment venues. Oranges are a gift, no question about it.

Gifts by Color

We know to give presents that our loved ones actually want, and not what we want, right? It's probably hardest to buy stuff for people so different from us because we ourselves do not place the same value on the gift. For example, my very Orange adult granddaughter wants a new tattoo for Christmas. To begin with, I don't understand tattoos at all and certainly would never spend any money on one for myself. But that's the point of a gift, isn't it? It's a gift -- something truly valuable to the recipient.

Gold Gifts. Who is the traditional, responsible Gold person in your life? They like what's "right." Here's a partial list: tasteful jewelry and clothing, practical furnishings and utensils for the home, the next piece of a cherished collection, gift cards for the right store, or an intimate item that further bonds your relationship.

Green Gifts. Your rational, deep-thinking Green friends and family members like stuff for their minds: cutting-edge software, books, intriguing games, coveted resources, tickets to events around their favorite subjects and hobbies, and useful material things that keep life utilitarian and efficient.

Blue Gifts. Those idealistic, harmony-seeking Blue folks in your life may be the least expensive to shop for just because they can value "the thought" more highly the actual gift. Are you good at making things that you can custom-tailor for your loved one? Can you write something special? How about tickets to music, theater, and conerts? Flowers and arty things? Or a warm piece of clothing they'll always remember you by?

Orange Gifts. Truth be known, nearly everybody wants to get what Oranges want and usually get. Oranges just want to have fun. They want to enjoy personal freedom. So they get surprises, trips, the latest clothes, cool tools, exciting games, toys, musical instruments, vacation tickets -- well, you get the idea.

Here's my own take on gifting. The best gifts are given with no strings, no investment in the outcome -- except in the hope the gift will bring genuine joy -- however temporary -- to the recipient. Say what you will about the materialism of the holiday season, underneath the colorful ribbons and enormous credit card debt is a desire to enrich the lives of others.

Your Color and Your Stress

If you attended my workshop, you received a book by Mary Miscisin.

She's writing a module called "Showing Your True Colors Under Stress." Would you like to help her do the research? If you do, please take a 10-question survey. To say thanks, she will give you a downloadable book that deals with stress associated with the four Colors.

Mary is a good friend of mine and an inspiration to us all. Please help her out with this project. Here's the link:
