Just figure it out, dudes. |
We tend to follow the Golden Rule when sending emails -- we send the kind we want to receive. In Four Windows, we know that's not the best rule. We want to write for all four Colors, not just for our own - to be effective.
Greens writing a la Green are brief. Here's an example:
Load Audacity (with LAME encoder) for free at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ |
If your PC laptop does not have a built-in microphone, then bring a USB headset with mic. |
"In other words, most of my friends understand this language and I'm hoping you do too. In any case, I'm sure you'll figure it out."
When your readers click on the link (above), they are wowed with a very busy page that looks more like advertising than simple instructions to download something.
To be more effective, here's what to add:
For Gold People. Golds want precise, clear instructions. Write them carefully and completely in an attachment and refer to it in the main body of your email.
For Orange People. Oranges, like Greens, may prefer to try to figure things out on their own, but they'll be happier if you alert them to some of the surprises they may encounter -- like the fact the links they need are "lost" in a big list of other links, so "all they need to do" is seek out the special "lame" link.
For Blue People. Blues want personal attention. Give them the direct-call customer service phone number to use if they need help. Better yet, if you haven't mailed your message to a million people, offer to walk them through it yourself. That's the expectation because that is what they would do for YOU.
Such is The Platinum Rule: Do unto others as they want to be done unto. And as a Green Communicator, you will get a reputation as a GREAT Green Communicator.
