Greetings!

We have a writing contest winner. See what an email looks like written to appeal to all four Colors!  Read the third article below!

It's BLUE week. If you have employees who are a challenge to motivate, pay attention to the top article again this week. See the archives for the last two editions on Green and Gold folks. People are motivated less by money and contests and more by goals that address their personal core needs and values. If you have more to add as you read these, please write me! [email protected].

No question about it. Blue folks feel they are unique and want to feel very much at home at work.

Here are some questions that Blue people ask themselves in choosing an organization to work with.

  1. Is this a friendly place where I will enjoy the company of my coworkers and even the people I report to?
  2. Does this company value personal interaction: one-on-one conversation and regular meetings where everyone is encouraged to give input?
  3. Is the policy of this company to have open communication and constant openness to new ideas?
  4. Is this a company that values teams and teamwork?
  5. Does this company truly care about its employees with plenty of training, wellness outreach, conflict management, career path counseling, and mentoring?
  6. Are people just as important as tasks?
  7. Is this organization open to change?
  8. Does this organization feel like family?
  9. Am I surrounded by kind people who appreciate, thank, and esteem one another?
  10. Are the tables round? That is, do we all get to participate in brainstorming and important decisions?

Family head is not Blue?

REWARDS for Blues

Of all the Colors, Blue folks are the least allured by money and other material rewards. Here is a partial list of rewards that Blues value highly.

  • Everyday kindnesses - genuine gifts of help and concern
  • All efforts to build, bolster and sustain effective teams in which Blues participate
  • Friendly connections that involve empathy, shared personal experiences, possible friendship, and warm social interaction (Yes, even in the hardest-core business settings)
  • Sensitivity to folks' feelings, the chief among which is compassion
  • Recognition for personal uniqueness and regular demonstrations of this recognition by invitations to meetings, brainstorming, taking action on their ideas, promotions
  • Invitations to communicate in speech and writing - Blues tend to be excellent communicators
  • Invitations to mentor, promote, problem-solve, resolve conflicts, and heal.
  • Appreciation of friendships formed rather than reprimands for "wasting time talking"

Disney - Friends For Change Commercial #2 - Send It On (June 02, 2009)
Disney - Friends For Change Commercial #2 - Send It On (June 02, 2009)

Disney Commercial

Disney uses Miley Cyrus and a bunch of young stars that most young people recognize to promote care for the environment. Notice the all-out appeal to the values of Blue people.

Constant use of the pronoun "we"

         Friendship

         Coming together

         For all of us

Visuals of shared recycling and other environmental-friendly activities

The use of names with the phrase "I'm (so-and-so)

Music and visuals that are all highly idealistic

         The word help

         Healing the earth

         One friend at a time

There is no mistaking the Blueness of this promotion. You might figure that "all young people" should enjoy it. However, even in their teens, the other Colors will possibly be a little uncomfortable with this high-school musical appeal. Greens want solid research. Golds want to see this kind of change tied to respectable authority (and of course Disney's name is a pretty good starting point), and the Oranges want action that looks enticingly competitive and cool.

Ameriprise Commercial

When you click on this promo featuring Tommy Lee Jones, be sure to further click on the module called "Introducing the Story of Ameriprise." The video is designed equally for Golds and Blues.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Ameriprise

Pay attention to the Blue appeal:

Friends and neighbors, no longer alone

         Looking at the future

         Having someone on their side

A company who makes its clients FIRST

         There when you need them

         One-on-one interaction

The irony of using Tommy Lee Jones as the pitchman is that the roles he plays are rarely Blue. His persona would appear mainly Orange-Green, so it's conceivably a stretch for Jones to be using the "touchy-feely" phrases of this commercial.

winnerCONTEST WINNER: Jahia Darmadji of P.T. Bentara Ltd.

The deadline was last Monday. Thank you for all the entries.  The goal was to write an e-mail text that appeals to ALL FOUR COLORS. The winner, Jahia Darmadji, won the Four Windows Personality Survey for up to 10 people in his circle, as well as Mary Miscisin's groundbreaking book Showing Our True Colors.  The company he worked for, P.T. Bentara, was founded fifty years ago in Jakarta, Indonesia.

THE WINNING ENTRY:

Please come to our concert on Tuesday, November 8. The kids have practiced for a year. They really want to IMPRESS YOU! You will sit with other parents and children to witness high achievement and joy in the eyes of the performers. All you have to do is show up.

Day and Date: Tuesday, November 8

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Location: George Washington Middle School Gymnasium

Fee: NO FEE

Seating: Come EARLY for the best seats

But will this be THE LAST music concert at George Washington Middle School? Do you know that the entire music program is on the block to be cut?

So please attend this concert. During intermission, you will get to see at least 10 ways we can protect the program for years to come.

Why keep the program?

Multiple studies prove correlation between music study and career success. See research at http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=correlation+between+music+and+career+success&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart

Thousands of alumni insist that only music kept them interested in school.

Serious music study includes sharp attention to the benefits of other subjects, especially math, computer science, physics, reading, composition, and other arts. Music must focus on precision, detail, complexity, acoustics, rapid reading, creativity, and cultural and historical context.

Music addresses individual uniqueness and inspiration when nothing else in the school curriculum does.

And don't forget that for pre-teens and teens, music brings out natural joy when nothing else might be doing so.

Support your child. Support all the children. Enjoy the concert!
