Greetings!

If you have employees who are a challenge to motivate, pay attention to the top article these next four weeks. People are motivated less by money and contests and more by goals that address their personal core needs and values. If you have more to add as you read these, please write me! dermody@cox.net.

Last week was my yearly visit to Leadership West camp! Every year, some newly-recruited, smart community-oriented leaders show up to learn together and then spend a year dedicating themselves to projects in the West Valley of the Metro Phoenix area. In the third article below, I am sharing the "homework assignments" I gave them to help guarantee continued success with Colors technology in the upcoming months.
How to motivate Greens

The good news is that Green people tend to be the most self-motivated of all the Colors. Excellent work is its own reward. Left alone with a worthy goal, Greens do not let up until full completion.

If they are working for you, your goals need to appeal to Green core values. Here is what Greens want to know about your goals:

1.    Is the goal truly worth spending time on? Is it useful, logical, interesting, and challenging?

2.    Will the Green person get a chance to learn something new and be inspired to create something original?

3.    Once completed, will the innovation be adopted and respectfully acted on? That is, can they count on you to follow through?

4.    Can the Green have complete or near-complete control over the project without a hovering supervisor?

5.    Is there plenty of time allotted for completion?

6.    Will they get to use the most affordable up-to-date resources available?

7.    Will you be open to new ideas, that is, really open to new ideas - especially abstract and exotic ideas?

8.    Will you be seen as a partner rather than a negative barrier to progress?

9.    Are you willing to accept highly logical and blunt analysis, and even criticism presented directly?

10.Will you appropriately recognize the Green person for the achievement, i.e., to clearly recognize your understanding of the work and benefits to you and others, as well as to thank the person suitably?

REWARDS for Greens

Most organizations cannot offer trips to Hawaii and super bonuses, but there are a thousand free, inexpensive, or financially achievable ways to reward folks for their successes.

Below is a brief, partial list of rewards that will usually ingratiate Green folks.

·         Plenty of independence and time to work alone; trust to work alone without micromanaging, including telecommuting

·         Placement on a team of highly interesting and respected colleagues

·         Plenty of very interesting new challenges, especially for the mind

·         Recognition and appreciation in the manner preferred by the individual

·         Follow-through and intelligent usage of systems created by the Green

·         Invitations to share own expertise and to consult with recognized experts

·         Invitations to participate in executive brainstorming and other meetings

·         Invitations to participate in strategic planning

·         Project leadership over an entire team, if requested

This TV ad for National Car Rental appeals directly to the core values of Green folks: competency, expertise, intellectual confidence, efficiency, and the freedom to make plenty of independent choices. FYI, Oranges should like the appeal just as well because of the enthusiasm, ease of use, recognition of talent, and the many options the vendor offers. Together Greens and Oranges make up about 40% of the adult population and tend to be entrepreneurs.

What you do not see in this example is the additional line that appeared on-air recently: "To find out more, go to NationalCar.com." Whether or not National Car intended to appeal to Green people specifically, this act of offering more information is just exactly what an interested Green might insist on. Greens will hope the website is fast, and offers a big variety of the most credible, clickable information possible.
