Uncover a Blue person -- without a survey!

Neil Diamond

How do you guess that somebody is Blue?

The easy answer is, Give it some time. But you don't always have time, especially if you are in sales. Imagine being a retail salesperson, for example. If you don't figure out the Color in the first minutes of conversation, you might unknowingly be pushing the customer away.

This week, we "uncover" Blue people. Once you engage in conversation, watch for the following.

1.    Blues are naturally friendly and approachable. Blue folks are "nice," truly. They will often boldly gaze into your eyes for a while and are best known to give you a warm smile - whether or not you have given them one. Their bodies move about as though relaxed - easily and freely. Don't be surprised if they touch or even hug you on the first meeting. They can make friends with everyone, even the IRS agent over to the house for an impromptu audit. Their clothing tends not to be intimidating, expensive, or even trendy.  If anything, the clothing looks comfortable to wear and leans toward the flowing and soft, especially for Blue women.

2.    Blue hands can be like wings. Blue hands tend to be wide open, often with the palms out. The hands move smoothly in and out, back and forth - like wings. The hands say what's mine is yours - my advice and my resources. The hands say your ideas are welcome and taken to heart.

3.    And the hands come together. Watch Blue hands embrace each other as two people hugging - palms crossed, fingers wrapped. Or Blue hands can be the hands of prayer - palms and extended fingers together loosely or tightly. Similarly - as though in in prayer or assurance - all the fingers and thumbs might be entwined.

4.   Blues want to know you. Of all the Colors, the Blue folk want to get into you. They want to know all about you and make you a friend - even if the conversation is about the driest possible business matter conceivable. As they probe about your profession, hobbies, friends and family, you will find they tend to be excellent listeners and validators. When it comes to ideas, they pride themselves in being open-minded and will have plenty of ideas of their own. In a phrase, they are easy to talk with.

5.   Blues can be enthusiastic and easily diverted. Do not be surprised if the focus of a conversation moves in several directions at once. Blues are easily distracted by new ideas and tangents - not always needing to hold on to a single issue. Blues can wear their hearts on their sleeve. They are comfortable with emotions - yours and theirs - and may be more dramatic with their voice and body language than other Colors.

6.   Blues are caring and helpful. Watch for plenty of questions aimed at helping you in some way. Blues are natural nurturers who aim to please. They want you to be comfortable and to enjoy your company. They warm up even more when they get personal, individualized attention.

Jane Fonda's Blue hands

Jane Fonda - interview 1966
Jane Fonda - interview 1966

Here are two video clips of Jane Fonda - the first when she was ever so young, being interviewed in France. Do not be put off because she is speaking in French, for you get to focus entirely on her hand gestures about one minute into the clip. Note the large wing-like movements. If you read her recent autobiographies, you will fairly easily sense her Introverted Blue-Orange temperament.

The second video is the 73-year-old Jane, just as expressive.

Why is it so hard for Blue people to get rich?

Being Blue myself, I am troubled that it seems Blue people (in general) do not seem to get rich, nor even care that much about money.

Sure, you can find exceptions, like Oprah Winfrey and Sargent Shriver. But even for them, I doubt that wealth ever was their primary motivator.

I'll never forget the day in my dad's office when he explained out of nowhere that people working for him had a specific dollar value, and not a penny more. I must have been 15 or 16 at the time. I was shocked.

That's Blue thinking at a less-than-mature level.

But it's true. The first thought about working that Blues have is - generally - that the work is service to others, it's help, it's something useful for somebody else or for an entire community. Getting paid for the work is a bonus, although a Blue would expect a fair enough wage to live comfortably. It's only fair. And, yes, Blues believe that life should be fair for everybody.

Here's the deal with Blues:

1.    Things can separate people, so why accumulate a lot of things?

2.    The "party place" for Blues is inside their heads. Ideas swirl around inside a Blue's head to such an extent that just a simple idea can be just as satisfying as the realization of the idea. For example, the idea of owning a yacht or villa might bring as much joy and happiness of actually owning one. Related to this, Blues can "fail" to take action where other Colors definitely would make a decision and start some action. Blues in leadership positions are urged to add people to the team who are naturally action-oriented.

3.    Blues don't often wish to be "rich" for the sake of "winning" over others; instead, they would prefer to be rich when they can bring others along with them.

4.    Blues prefer giving to receiving. Even Oprah thrilled to giving a car to every member of her audience. I doubt she was showing off as much as enjoying sharing her resources.

5.    The fact is that American society pays high prices for high technology, sports tickets, executives who perform financial miracles, some engineers - just to name a few. On the other hand, careers that Blues often choose are not highly paid, e.g., teachers, counselors, customer servers, facilitators, non-profit managers, priests and ministers - just for starters.

6.    Being highly competitive is natural for the other three Colors, but Blues would rather be cooperative. They use the pronoun "we" more than anybody. We, the team, will win. We, the family will function better this year. It's important for Blues that, as individuals, they continually grow and gain happiness - and this wish this for everyone with all their hearts and souls.

So, can Blue people "get rich"? You betcha. Never forget that once Blue folks have set an important goal, they kick in their natural passion for success and their natural passion for pursuing great causes. If making money for themselves or others is the goal, watch out, world!!!
