Bienvenidos a La Sala!

We hope you enjoy our new newsletter format. Please let us know if you have any difficulty downloading or viewing our newsletter. You can always reach us at info@lasalaseattle.org with any comments.

They say that all art is political. If this is true (and it probably is) then with the election just a few days away, we would be remiss if we did not urge you to get out and VOTE! To reinforce this thought we've thrown in some information on the upcoming election including one link that is pure politics - but relevant to our community.

Also see a brief recap of our latest La Sala gathering and some teaser information about our next event - mark your calendars for December 1st. Va ser super divertido.

Saludos a todos!

Recuerdos de las Mujeres/Women Remembering Women - Four local writers offer literary remembrances for Day of the Dead was an event that took place on October 14th at ArtXchange Gallery. The event was sponsored by ArtXchange Gallery and co-produced by La Sala. At this event Wendy Call, Catalina M. Cant, Gabriella Gutirrez y Muhs, and Christina Montilla read their prose and poetry in preparation for Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead. The readings were at times somber and often humorous as these prolific writers offered their remembrances of times spent or times imagined with powerful women in their lives; women that have now passed or in some cases never existed. Attendees were encouraged to bring a photo of a woman they would like to honor for a remembrance altar. An evening of fascinating readings was complimented with great food (delicious tamales and chocolate caliente - the real stuff!) stunning visual art by photographer and ArtXchange Director Cora Edmonds and painter and craftsman extraordinaire Pedro De Valdivia. Music was provided by Miho and Diego. It was truly a beautiful evening; a journey of literary, visual and musical art.

If you were not able to make it to this event, we look forward to seeing you at our next event on December 1st. Save the date! More info coming soon!

Artist Portfolios: What are these Things? How Can I Make Mine Shine?

portfolioarticleimage Artist portfolios are an integral method of displaying an artist's spectrum of visual work. Your portfolio contains important information that is instrumental in the evaluations and reviews given by art professionals, such as art dealers and institutional curators to name a few. It is through these portfolios that future projects and opportunities will be granted based on the artist's skills and their appropriate placement to specific standards associated with particular venues. Poetry in Translation/
Translation in Poetry
(La poesa en traduccin / La traduccin en poesa)

Poetry in translation has become a major influence on the sensibilities of poets in the West. Likewise, the practice of translation, from most of the world's major languages, and from many languages less well-known in the West, has become increasingly common among poets writing in English and in many other languages. As translators to and from Spanish, Chilean-American poet Eugenia Toledo and American poet, translator, and Fulbright grantee to Chile, Carolyne Wright, will read translations from a number of Chilean poets (such as Pablo Neruda, Jorge Teillier, Marjorie Agosin, and Eugenia Toledo) and talk about what works and what doesn't in transforming these into poetry in English.
