Dear Parents,

Congratulations to Jason Cochrane, Academic Director, one of this year's Great-West Great-Teachers Grant Recipients!

He will be awarded a $5,000 grant for the 2012-13 school year to start or enhance personal financial literacy programs in the classroom.

Specifically, Jason's grant will be used to enhance a unit on energy conservation. The grant program, Finances Electrify Energy Conservation: Does Renewable Energy Make Cents?, is a unique interdisciplinary, real-world approach to teaching personal and professional, short- and long-term financial skills. It combines mathematics, social studies and science through classroom lessons, real-world simulations, a field trip and guest speaker to explore the key concepts of credit, savings, investing, ratios and renewable energy in making real-world personal and professional financial decisions. Jason plans to use his grant to purchase books, hardware and software for iPads, as well as cover field trip costs to increase financial literacy in Ben Franklin Academy's 6th grade classrooms.

Whether it's called financial literacy, personal finance or money management, young people need to know how to balance a checkbook, save for future needs and get the most for their money.  Great-West Great-Teachers financial literacy grant initiative is designed to financially assist Colorado educators in teaching their students the basics and beyond.  For more information, click here.
