Quote of the Week
Dear Preschool Families,

Everyone seems to be getting into their new routines. The children are coming to school eager to learn and know what to expect of their day.  We will give the children a few more weeks to get acclimated, and then we will open up opportunities for parent volunteers.  With preschool-aged children, it is important they get used to being at school without mom or dad before they spend time in the classroom.

Also, you will notice that the preschool newsletter is now being sent with Principal Barber's newsletter. You will simply be able to click from his newsletter to the preschool newsletter to read it.  Although not all of the information in the principal's newsletter may pertain to the preschool, it is a great source about the school in general and includes information about school-wide events in which the preschool can participate.  In addition, the preschool newsletter will be posted on the Ben Franklin Academy website
Preschool Event Calendar Change

It was brought to my attention that the dates for Fall Break on our event calendar is incorrect.  Please note that Fall Break is Oct. 17-19.  Always refer to the school calendar for any questions on when school is in session.

Classroom Highlights

This month's theme is All About Me.  It is a time to explore the many differences in people and how each of us are unique.  This is a great theme to start off the year as the kids get to know more about themselves and each other.

Here are some highlights of the week:

  • Mrs. Furnier's class was given cutouts of people and lots of art supplies (buttons, small cotton balls, tissue paper, etc. - all great for fine motor skills).  The students were encouraged to make their own person.  Some had five eyes, but hey, it's art!  Don't forget to bring in a family photo for your child to share and enjoy in class.
  • Mrs. Olson's class worked on their addresses and phone numbers.  This is a skill that may take months to master, but awareness is the first step.  They also learned about the "hard workers" in the alphabet - A, E,  I, O and U.
  • Mrs. Spurgeon's class expressed their creativity by creating their own snails after observing Henri Matisse's painting The Snail.  They also went on a walk around the building looking for their ABCs.
School Pictures

School pictures are scheduled from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, and Thursday, Sept. 20.  Order forms will be in your cubbies by Tuesday, Sept. 18.  Pictures will be taken during school.
Drop-off and Pick-Up Procedures

A few bumps in our drop-off and pick-up procedures have resulted in another change to be more efficient. Here is how we will proceed:

  1. Pull into Parking Lot C to the right and loop around to the service road.
  2. If you need to park in front of the parked cars, park to the left.
  3. Do not block the curved area.
  4. If you do not have older siblings at Ben Franklin Academy, please do not pull into the parking lot until or after 8:10 a.m.  This will help a little with the congestion.  Preschool does not start until 8:20 a.m., so your child will not be late.
  5. If you have older children, please be sure that they walk in with you. At no time is it appropriate to release your child to walk across the parking lot alone. This is for his/her safety.
  6. If Parking Lot C is full, a car pool staff member in a yellow vest will direct you to pull up the left lane by the school and park.
  7. If there is no staff member present, and K-8 car pool is over, you may pull up the left lane and park.
  8. The right lane is legally a fire lane; therefore, it is a no parking zone.
  9. If you are in doubt about where you can park, please ask a staff member in a yellow vest.

Always remember that you cannot park in a manner where another car cannot easily pass. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation in making sure all children get to and from school safely.

Stick with Name Bubbles

Never lose your kid's stuff again (or at least find it easily in the Lost and Found)!  You can with Name Bubbles - personalized, self-adhesive labels that are fun, durable and made to stay put through the laundry and dishwasher. When you buy Name Bubbles, 20 percent of the proceeds go directly to Ben Franklin Academy Preschool!

To order, go to NameBubbles.com, and choose your favorite labels. Most importantly, enter BFA2012 in the Promotional Code section when you are ready to purchase, and click "Apply" to activate the code, as this is how the school receives credit for its sales.

You can order Name Bubbles any time throughout the year, but get your order in before Sunday, Sept. 30, to be included in our fall fundraising check (the next check isn't cut until April).  For more information, click here

Quote of the Week

A parent shared a conversation she had with her child on Monday:

"Mom, I thought you said I could come to school every day."

"Well, you are."

"What was that break then?"

"That was Saturday and Sunday, the weekend."

That made my day.  Thanks Nicholas - I am glad you love to come to school.  We love seeing you every day, too!

Sincerely,

Kristen Goldberg
