As you strolled into work today, you probably noticed that temperatures are beginning to rise and spring is in the air.
However, if you have the misfortune of living in an area where the groundhog's predictions are ringing true, then shoveling parking lots and walkways is still part of the daily routine. If you live in the Southeast you may have been lulled to sleep by the mild weather predicted by our possum (see the February Newsletter). Whatever the case, the buzz of spring bowling leagues heating up has certainly clued you in that spring has almost sprung!
Public Service Announcement: Daylight Savings Time begins March 11. Be sure to set your clocks ahead by one hour unless you are in Arizona, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or most of the Eastern Time Zone portion of Indiana.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit
 ...Or Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Saturday, March 17
We don't usually begin our monthly newsletters with upcoming holidays, but this month we are making an exception.
St. Patrick's Day isn't just a day of celebrating Irish and Irish American culture by drinking copious amounts of alcohol. Thankfully, however, many people see it that way, which makes it one of biggest, gift-wrapped presents of the year for the service industry.
Below are a couple more reasons why I believe that cash registers should be ringing like church bells this St. Patrick's day, even if you don't sell alcohol.
- Everyone will be celebrating - I know what you are thinking. "Bob, everyone already celebrates St. Patrick's Day". I disagree. Most people observe St. Patrick's Day. In the last 10 years, St. Patrick's Day has fallen on a work day all but three times. Therefore, true celebration of the unofficial holiday has been reserved for those classified as "other-than gainfully employed" or "soon-to-be other than gainfully employed". Those of
us you who use the holiday as an excuse to pinch colleagues who are green-averse, while mindfully avoiding HR, are merely observers. To sum it up, find a way to attract families to your family establishment. - Your bowling center has built-in entertainment - Every other establishment near you is going to try to do something to set themselves apart from the others, but I guarantee you that none of them will be able to convert into a bowling center before the 17th.
Use this to your advantage and you'll be deciding which door prize to give to the best-dressed leprechaun while everyone else is looking for the next-best karaoke guy with 10 different versions of Danny Boy!
With a wee bit of planning, and the use of your websites and centers to spread the word, you won't need the Luck O' the Irish to see more green this St. Patrick's Day!

March Madness
Now that I've gotten you pumped up for St. Patrick's Day, I wanted to briefly talk about the March event that has the potential to blow it out of the water - March Madness.
I say "briefly" because it would be impossible for me to summarize all of the doctrine included in the religion that is NCAA Basketball in March. If you don't know what March Madness is, here are some statistics that might help you wrap your head around the scope and breadth of this phenomenon:
- In 2009 only the NFL playoffs received more sports-related advertising revenue.
- According to some estimates, the NCAA tournament accounts for as much as $7 billion annually in illegal gambling. The Nevada Gambling Commission said between $80 and $90 million each year is bet on the tournament at the state's licensed sports books.
- According to one disputed study, March Madness cost U.S. businesses $1.8 billion in lost productivity in 2009.
- A three-year study at Duke found that article viewership at 78 research libraries dropped by 6 percent during the first week of the NCAA tournament.
As you can see, because of the sheer magnitude of March Madness, it would be naive to assume that it won't affect your business. Below are a few bullet points that can be a starting point as you dive into March Madness. I highly encourage you to make Google your friend this month.
- National Bracket Day is March 12. If you don't know what that is, Google it, but don't get too caught up in it. Entire books have been written about the subject. The goal is to figure out how you can use it to drive your business.
- March Madness ends on April 2. There are three full weeks of Madness. Be creative.
- Follow college basketball for the next month even if you don't like basketball! Find out who the locals are pulling for. Find out which team in the tournament is nearest to your geographic location (rule doesn't apply to those of you in North Carolina).
- Make Google your friend. I know that I have already said it but it is important enough to say it again. Find out what others have done that has and hasn't worked.
