February?!?
Really??
Here in South Carolina it has been October for the last four months. At least that's what the weather has us believing, and we're not alone. Nearly two-thirds of the way through, it seems like most of the country is having a mild winter. Don't let the weather fool you, however. We have learned in South Carolina, you have to always be vigilant. In two of the last three years our worst winter storms have come in March.
Maybe there is something to that groundhog thing in Pennsylvania, but down here I'm pretty sure we'd have to use a possum!

"Proceed With Caution!"

We've all seen the signs. It sounds like a fair warning. But if you have snow and ice in your parking area or sidewalk, is a warning enough to cover your liability when someone slips and falls?
Removal of snow and ice is a very important step when it comes to preventing guest injuries and ensuring a safe workplace for employees.
We all know how to get rid of the snow. Most of us have done it and would rather not do it again. The work is time consuming and back-breaking and usually involves a big flat shovel. But what about the ice? That stuff just doesn't want to come up!
Ice does not freeze on the pavement. It freezes or bonds to the pavement. De-icers and chemicals break the bond after they seep through the ice. When possible, these need to be applied prior to the snowfall to prevent the bonding. If applied after the event, the chemicals will work, but you will play a waiting game.

In addition to being prepared to clean up the mess after a winter storm, you need to also be prepared for any storm that might hit while your business is open. Listed below are a few ideas that could make dealing with this kind of emergency much easier.
- Make sure that there are plenty of flashlights and batteries available, and keep them where you know that you can find them.
- Make sure that you have a list of emergency contact numbers.
- Make sure that you have an evacuation plan in place.
- Most importantly, make sure that all of your employees know what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency.
For a sample emergency plan, as well as more tips and information about designing your own plan, check out our June 2011 Newsletter.

Upcoming Holidays
I know that we are a couple of days past the biggest holiday in February, the Super Bowl, but we touched on that in last month's newsletter. Below is a run-down of the others.
Since I'm pretty sure that none of you would want to use any of the marketing ideas that I could summon, let this just stand as a public service announcement for the gentlemen. Valentine's Day is February 14!
That's next Tuesday!
Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February. This year it falls on February 20th. Local, State, and Federal employees have the day off of work and schools will be out. This is another opportunity to drive sales on a typically slow Monday as long as you prepare for it. |
