Wow! This is the twelfth installment of our monthly newsletter.  How quickly time passes! The Holiday Season is in full swing, Christmas is upon us, and the record books are only weeks away from being sealed for 2011.

Again, as in last month's newsletter, I want to begin by saying "Thank You" to all of you who have allowed me to be a part of your businesses this year.  It has been an honor and a pleasure.  I also want to express my appreciation to all of you who have been a part of making this newsletter what it is today.  With your suggestions and devoted readership, we have been able to offer insightful information and ideas to help promote the growth of many businesses.

If you have missed any of our newsletters over the past year, you can find them by clicking this link to our archive page.  As always, continue to send us suggestions about what you would like to see covered in 2012!

In this section of our newsletter I want to discuss some "Building Best Practices" that I think will be very helpful during the upcoming winter months. But before we get to that I wanted to start by explaining the picture.

- This is not a picture of a bowling center.
- This is not a picture of some unfortunate business run by an overworked owner.
- This is not a a picture of a business run by an apathetic or unaware owner.

- This is a picture of a Fire Station that was run and maintained by some of the most cautious, well prepared people in our society;  and because of their preparation, no one was hurt!

It can happen to anyone, even the most well-prepared.
Below are some simple practices, suggested by insurance companies that we work with, that can better prepare you for catastrophe, either by preventing it, or mitigating, it if one were to occur.

Building temperature should be monitored, documented and maintained at 40°F or higher.
  • Perform freeze inspections and be cognizant of shutdown procedures
  • Have a contingency plan with contractors and suppliers
  • Prepare a Pre-emergency plan for fire water damage and snow removal should be established
  • Service boilers, furnaces, heaters and flues regularly
  • 24 hour building surveillance
  • Enforce a no smoking policy
  • Safeguard flammable or combustible liquids

Preventing Heavy Roof Loading & Collapse
  • Maintain all roofs and keep current with repairs
  • Arrange to have all roofs cleared of snow, especially where snow drifts are visible
  • Removal of accumulation of snow from your driveways, parking areas, sidewalks, entryways and exits, is essential to maintain safe access to your facility.
Marketing Quick Tip
Scream Bowling Ball
As I mentioned at the top of the newsletter, Christmas is a few short weeks away.

Consider offering your center as a gathering place for businesses having office parties.  Bowling centers are a great place for co-workers to mingle, because they eliminate the possibility of awkward conversations brought about by silence.

This might sound like a no-brainer, but you have to decorate.  The Christmas/Holiday season is a festive time of year that almost everyone enjoys, even if they don't celebrate the same way.  Simple decorations in your bowling center can be enough to extend the jolly (read "giving") mood of your customers.

Unusable bowling pins, painted with a seasonal theme, can be great decorations, as well as very interesting talking pieces.  If you lack artistic ability, consider having a contest with the local kids.  You can display their "artwork" in your center and pick a winner at the end of the season.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
