Wow! It's hard to believe that we are already into the new year!

Again, as in last month's newsletter, I want to begin by saying "Thank You" to all of you who have allowed me to be a part of your businesses this year.  It has been an honor and a pleasure.  I also want to express my appreciation to all of you who have been a part of making this newsletter what it is today.  With your suggestions and devoted readership, we have been able to offer insightful information and ideas to help promote the growth of many businesses.

If you have missed any of our newsletters over the past year, you can find them by clicking this link to our archive page.  As always, continue to send us suggestions about what you would like to see covered in 2012!
Safety and Security
BowlingCenterInsurance.comIn the November newsletter, I talked about the benefits and effectiveness of security cameras.  And while, when placed conspicuously, they can be a deterrent for a potential criminal, their primary usefulness is identifying what happened after the fact.  If you are robbed or burglarized, security cameras do nothing to mitigate your loss.

With that consideration, I wanted to discuss three areas of your business that, if properly controlled, may help to prevent crime as well as lessen the blow of a loss if a crime does occur.

*Note: All businesses are different.  This list does not represent what any business should do.  This list should not be taken as advice, but as a prompt to help you begin to think through some of the controllable areas of your business.

1. Cash Control -
One study showed that a strong cash control policy coupled with signage noting that cash registers contained less than $50 decreased robbery rates by 80%.
  • Ideas
    • Install a drop safe
    • Post cash-amount signage

2. Secure Your Environment (Internal & External)

  • Ideas
    • Provide adequate lighting
    • Remove signs that impede vision
    • Invite police for regular visits
    • Keep your business neat
    • Keep rear-access doors locked
    • Install Security cameras and Silent alarms

3. Employee Training - In my opinion, this is the most important of the three because it is the employees who are charged with maintaining all of the systems and procedures that you, the business owner/manager, put in place.

  • Ideas
    • Schedule regular security training meetings
    • Implement a security shift check list

Lastly, I wanted to pass along a few ideas that were recently forwarded to me by an owner, whom we work with, who has graciously allowed me to publish some of his center's procedures.  Again, this is not intended to be advice.  Every business is different, and each business should independently seek advice from security professionals.

  • Cash drops every 30-60 minutes
  • Never leave the building alone
  • Leave cash drawers open and empty at night to deter burglary and prevent damage
  • In the event of a robbery, never disclose the amount stolen
Upcoming Holidays

I know that we have just come through the busiest holiday stretch of the year, but that doesn't mean that you should take a break from promoting your center.  January does give you a chance to relax, however, with just one holiday outside of New Year's Day.

BowlingCenterInsurance.comMartin Luther King Jr. Day is a national holiday that is observed on the 3rd Monday in January.  This year it is January 16th.  While there are no traditional holiday celebrations, most schools and government offices will be closed, which will provide you an opportunity to draw a crowd on a typically slow Monday.

BowlingCenterInsurance.comAs a reminder, Super Bowl Sunday is February 5th and your bowling center would be a great place to watch the Broncos and the Packers battle it out!  Hey...Everybody loves an underdog!  You may even want to consider Playoff parties in the weeks leading up to the Big Game to create buzz and provide a test run for the Grand Finale.
