IT'S NOTE TOO LATE TO COME TO THE SLOW FOOD O'AHU POTLUCK AND TOUR.  Here is a repeat of the announcement from the last newsletter.   Hurry, as there are only a few days to firt this in your Memorial Day Weekend schedule....

----
Come join us for a potluck lunch and get to know your fellow members.  We hope to have periodic potlucks at various locations on O'ahu.  Our first potluck will be held at the Kahalu`u campus of Marimed, a non-profit organization with a residential program for at-risk youth that features experiential therapy -- including learning to grow, prepare and eat fresh food.  Come see their hydroponic vegetable greenhouse, small fish ponds, and taro lo'i. If we're lucky, there will be something to harvest. Lunch under a covered patio with beautiful views of the Ko`olaus. For information about Marimed, check out www.marimed.org.

A short tour of the grounds and the facility will be offered at 11 a.m. thanks to member Lynn Carey.  The potluck will be held from Noon - 2 p.m. To RSVP please contact Michelle Phillips at sfo.reservations@gmail.com by May 29. Please bring your own serving utensils, plates, glasses, napkins, cutlery, and drinks.  Also, Marimed is a drug free and alcohol free campus due to their kids on campus.  Directions will be provided to those who RSVP.    There is no cost to attend, although a donation calabash will be available to thank Marimed for hosting us on a weekend.
A Nourishing North African Feast
Saturday, June 12, 11am - 1:30pm

Combining fragrant spices, dried fruits, tender savory meats, vibrant vegetables, toasty nuts and seeds, and flavorful grains, the foods of North Africa are a veritable celebration for the palate!  Selecting the most nourishing local, organic ingredients, Skya Boudousquie and Traci Potterf, Ph.D. of Ola Loa Wellness will take you on a culinary journey. In this cooking demonstration and workshop, you will learn to shop for and prepare a full North African feast.  In the process, we will also explore how specific preparation techniques and ingredient choices can optimize health, well-being, and eating pleasure.  At the end of the evening, we'll enjoy a full meal together and participants will take home recipes for all of the dishes.  This event will take place at the wonderful kitchen facilities at Lyon Arboretum in Manoa Valley.  To learn more about Ola Loa Wellness or for more information about instructors Skya and Traci, visit http://www.olaloawellness.com.

Menu :
Chicken Tagine with Prunes, Cinnamon, and a Touch of Honey:  This fragrant, dish is seasoned with warm spices, slow cooked until tender, and topped with its prune reduction and raw honey glaze, then garnished with toasted sesame seeds. Chickens are truly pasture raised by our friends at the Tin Roof Ranch!
Millet Couscous: Borrowed from the Sahel region of Africa, we have chosen to replace refined, precooked couscous with this whole, gluten free grain, garnished with grass fed local butter, herbs and other tasty treats.
Swiss Chard Tagine:  Learn what simple ingredients give this delicious vegetable dish it's unique flavor. Looking for a new way to prepare dark leafy greens? This is it!
Orange and Carrot Salad: Naturally sweet and refreshing with a hint of orange blossom water, carrots and oranges make a great palate cleansing finish to our feast.
Herbal Spearmint Tea

Dinner and a Movie - "FRESH: The Movie" at V-Lounge
Saturday, June 26, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Come join Slow Food Oahu for the first screening of "FRESH: The Movie" at V-lounge!   Not much goes better with a movie than pizza!  V-lounge offers kiawe wood-fired pizza using fresh ingredients, including local stars like Hamakua mushrooms and Ma'o produce whenever possible and is definitely some of the best pizza in town!  An assortment of their signature, Neapolitan-style pizza will be served up to movie-watchers along with their specialty salad and ahi crudo.  Beverages (full service bar, beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks) will be available for purchase and the corkage fee is $10 if you would like to bring your own wine.  V-lounge is located on Kona Street near Ala Moana Center.

"FRESH: The Movie" celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system - each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity.  Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.  Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur's 2008 Genius Award and sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan's book, The Omnivore's Dilemma.  You can read more about the movie here: http://www.freshthemovie.com/about/.

Announcing Slow Suppers @ Home in July

During the month of July, we are trying a new event that two of our members enjoyed at the Edinburgh Scotland Slow Food convivium.  Called Slow Suppers @ Home, it is a series of convivial meals held in local members' homes to celebrate Slow Food's values of hospitality, home cooking, and the sharing of food and friendship.

We invite our members to sign up to host a supper one evening in July. Full details about the suppers and what's involved in hosting, are now available on www.slowfoodoahu.org.  The host registration form may be obtained by emailing SFO_Suppers@hotmail.com. Please consider supporting this initiative, as we believe that such congenial events are truly at the heart of what Slow Food means to most of our members.

For now, we are just signing up host venues. Booking to attend one of the suppers as a guest should be available around June 15, 2010 with the next newsletter.
