Surprising Photo Products and Tips
| Well, I haven't come across any unique photo products in the last month so I will share a photo tip. Although I could talk about the Canon 7D that ate my hard drive and now I am up to a 2 TB external hard drive and then of course there is Gaffers Tape but I won't bore you. So I will share some photo wisdom on how to improve your photography...

All to often many of you were taught to take a good outdoor picture the sun had to be behind you shining on the subject...but if you study light and the direction of light you will see that the sculpting of your subject becomes more dramatic when the sun is behind your subject.
So I suggest next time you are outside with your camera find an interesting subject and photograph it with the sun behind it. Experiment with the exposure also by over and under exposing the subject, take notes. Finally, be sure to block the light coming into your lens with either your hand or lens shade to avoid lens flare..or accept the lens flare and call it art....happy shooting.

Dear Readers,
Welcome to June's Newsletter. May was a month of return clients, surprise clients and even a new clients. The month started with the long awaited Jackson-Dean Construction architectural shoot of the new REI in Missoula. A pleasant surprise call from Cynergy Advertising (aka The Maverick Group). They needed to update a product photograph of their clients' hot selling item, "The Grain Maker" for consumer advertising. The month ended with a new client, my first Senior Portrait of the Season, Jack from Hamilton. "Frankie's Mercantile", According to Frances, the owner, is "doing well". So if you are downtown, especially this Friday (First Friday) stop by and look at all the unique items she has for sale.
Don't forget to check out our Monthly photo specials.
This month, we are offering a special "Fathers' Day" package similar to our successful "Mother's Day Package". For only $100 you can purchase a session or a gift certificate for a studio session of your favorite man with or without son or daughter. In addition to the session you will receive an 8.5" x 11" print, of your choosing from the session. Just think the same guy who photographed Bill Cosby, Kirk Douglas, John Irving, and other celebs will be photographing your loved ones.
As you may have noticed, my portrait has not changed. I am still sporting my new $10 shades. Seems like a lot of readers like this portrait. It was taken by the local extraordinaire music photographer and model, Charles Martin. (Thanks Charles).
June in Montana is usually when things finally heat up. We have had a pretty wet and cold May so the warmth will be a welcome site..." I know, I know, all the precipitation is good for the mountains." (Montana Joke). but a little sun would be nice!!!
Finally, I took the plunge and purchased the Canon 7D camera (18 MP) to provide even higher quality images for my most demanding clients. This will also give me the opportunity to dive into the high definition videography market (think Speilberg/Scorsese/Bergman and then go see their movies) So far I I really like the camera, especially it's auto focus...Although it does require the latest technology..read more at my blog.
I look forward to your comments and suggestions. Remember to click on the links for more info.
Please feel free to share this newsletter with your friends and family. Be Well, Steven

The Photographer's Almanac:
 George Eastman: 1854-1932
" You push the button we do the rest." Technology has always transformed photography and one of the great entrepreneurs, George Eastman, proved that tenfold. Leaving school at 14 to support his widowed mother and family Mr. Eastman was driven to succeed. His interest in photography was by chance, taking a vacation he decided to document his trip with the camera of the day A View Camera : a camera as big and heavy as microwave, glass plates, chemistry and a portable darkroom (tent). Not exactly a point and shoot. Frustrated by all the gear and especially "wet glass plates" ( film du jour). He decided to invent a better way to record images. Instead of the wet plate process he invented the dry plate, eventually using paper and gelatin. Like Henry Ford he felt photography should be for the masses and offered a camera " the Kodak" with a roll of film. Take your pictures and send the camera to Rochester NY. There they would print you pictures and send you camera back with a fresh roll of film, hence the motto. The name Kodak was also invented by Mr. Eastman,he liked the letter K and created a word that sounded right to him. As they say the rest is history.
