It was Friday, October 3rd. 2008, the rain was pouring,
temperatures had dropped and I was finally opening the doors of my studio after three weeks
of non-stop renovation/preparation. That "First
Friday" opening will always be a warm memory because of all the family and friends that sent flowers or showed up.
This October 2nd from 5:30 to 8 pm, I will be celebrating my
one-year anniversary with sweets, libations and my first exhibition of images
from Stickerville.
Black and White photographs of musicians
performing by the light of the moon, young adults right out of the book Tom Sawyer, and
children just having fun. Stickerville will be on display throughout the month of
October.
Originally shot on black and white film (remember film?) and scanned, the photos were printed on 13" x 19" Brilliant Museum acid free archival inkjet
paper. Each photograph is a signed limited edition print. For purchased prints special discount framing by MontanaArt will be available.
"First Friday" in November the Begleiter.com Gallery will
exhibit, for the first time, original paintings by FauxPink., aka Jill Meyer and Shelly Bickel. The paintings celebrate and honor the courage of breast cancer survivors in a very unique way.
"First Friday" in December will bring back writer/photographer Kevin Connolly for a book signing and an exhibition of his
work. We look forward to seeing you at
our anniversary party and throughout the coming year.
If you would like more information or a price list send us an e-mail and we will be happy to send you our prices.

Current Assignments:
Ms Teen Montana 2009 Dakota McKay photo by Begleiter.com
In my last newsletter I had mentioned the surge of interest from my Senior Portrait promotion. I am happy to announce one of the
seniors I photographed, Dakota, was selected as Ms. Teen Montana and will go to
the national competition later this year.
In addition to senior portraits, I was commissioned to
create a "fantasy" photograph for a client on a Saturday and spent Monday photographing for a
corporate client, Vemco Corporation ( you gotta luv this bizness).
A new local client (nationally based) , ALPS, hired me to
photograph their employees. Another new local client hired me to photograph a
local hero, Monte (the U. of M. mascot), with 42 sorority women and 8 children
for a poster promoting a book drive. This month ends with a commission for a family portrait. Needless
to say September has been a busy month.
October, as of this writing, yields two assignments, thus far.
My images from Every Women Matters were prominently
displayed at the Montana Public Health Annual Meeting and Conference in Missoula. The
show will than travel to Great Falls to find a home for three months at the GF
history museum.
In November my photographs will appear in the national
magazine Hearth and Home and the Nov./Dec. issue of Photo Techniques will
feature my article on "Web Sites for Photographers"
There will be a
link to these articles in the November newsletter.

Dear Friends,
One Year Later: It will officially be one year since I opened my studio on 223 West Front St. in Missoula. Some of the highlights from the first year were:
- The
"Every Woman Matters" photo exhibit, which drew over 300 visitors opening
night, it is still touring the great state of Montana.
- Kevin Connolly's "Rolling Exhibition" which
drew 150 visitors opening night. Kevin a will be returning to the studio in
December with new work and a recently published book. In addition
- I had the
opportunity and privilege to teach autistic children and adults photography
basics at my studio. Through a grant by the VSA of Montana we were able to mount an
exhibit of their work at other retail venues in Missoula.
- To celebrate the one-year anniversary
of the gallery I will be exhibiting my personal work " Stickeville" for First
Friday in October.
One of our goals in the first year was to expand our photography services to the consumer market by offering high quality, creative high school senior
portraits, weddings and family portraits at affordable prices.
I am happy to say,
after a slow start, the retail side of the business is beginning to pick up. In
addition, I have been commissioned by out of state commercial clients, which have helped keep my doors open.
I want to thank all my current customers and friends for their support and I look forward to see what the coming year has in store.
Sincerely, Steven

October Photo Tips:
Color, color, color. What a great time to photograph, all
the leaves are turning color; the light is golden, even the desert yields beautifully subtle changes of color. Before you go out and capture all that beauty, don't forget about composition, juxtaposition and time of day.
1) In the
previous newsletter I discussed the mechanics of composition using the
Golden Rule (you can access my newsletter archive via my website or through the link at the bottom of this newsletter). There is a strong tendency for beginners to be
carried away in the moment, in this instance the beauty of nature, and
disregard the cornerstones of good photography. Before you capture your
award winning fall image look to all four corners of the viewfinder and
ask your self " is this a strong composition?" "Can I leave something out
of this frame? will it look better?"
Each of you have your own unique way of seeing so
when you answer those questions about composition remember the rules then
follow your instincts, which may break a rule or two. That's o.k.
2) Juxtaposing
of visual elements is a strong tool to apply when composing your frame. Be aware of transforming a three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional plane.
Looking for patterns, similar shapes and color contrasts are a few of the
clues you discover in creating your masterpiece. Final note, think about
whether you want to bring these elements together by using a telephoto lens
or give the visual elements more breathing room by using a wide angle.
3) Time
of Day: the magic hours of light are usually early morning or late evening
when the sun is low to the horizon and there is an orange cast on the
world you see. In the fall the sun is especially low and golden and can
even create a surreal template for your award-winning image. With that
said, don't forget the overcast days, the "shadow less light" that pumps
up the color of the fall leaves..just tweak it in post production to increase
the contrast.
So get outside and enjoy one of my favorite seasons to take your award winning photos.
