To PSA or Not PSA?

An expert task force in the U.S. has recommended against a routine Prostate-Specific Antigen Test (PSA) to screen for prostate cancer.  This does not sit well with many men. Many who have received this  routine blood test, have uncovered cancer, and were able to get treatment early in the disease process. We recommend that men discuss their options with their primary care physician or urologist, before deciding to forego the PSA test.  Ask the doctor that knows your health status and your family history best.

A Second Look Saved Her Life

When we first met this glamorous Cayman woman she told us that "nothing made sense to her." We promised to be her cancer translators and walk her through the medical process. The first step was getting her the right imaging tests, (MRI and PET-CT) and an appointment for a second opinion with Dr. Peter Citron, top ranked Hematology-Oncologist and clinical member of Advanced Medical Specialties in South Miami, Florida. Dr. Citron believed that her original diagnosis was not accurate, and proceeded to establish a new treatment plan for her. One ½ years later, there is no cancer.  She is now a newly married woman and looking forward to many happy years with her husband and family.  And it all started with a phone call asking for a Second Look.

 Knee Pain is Not Normal:

A Patient Story

Severe pain and lack of mobility led Sheldon Williams to see a doctor in Miami about his left knee. The doctor examined him and told him he was not a candidate for knee replacement. But his pain persisted, and he called ORNOA. We referred Sheldon to Dr. William Leone, an orthopedic surgeon in Ft. Lauderdale, who has dedicated his surgical practice to knee and hip replacements. Dr. Leone told him that he would benefit immensely from a Partial Knee Replacement. It was a message he was ready to hear. Active with worldwide travels, family events, and aquatic aerobics the persistent knee pain was keeping Sheldon from the things he loved to do.

"Having a Patient Navigator like Shelly made all the difference in the world. She was my rock, and always knew what to do and where to go."

  ~ Sheldon Williams

His wife said he no longer walked, "he waddled."   What convinced him to go through with the procedure was Dr. Leone's assurance that he would regain his normal activities, and not be limited by how much he walked or swam. So in late April, Dr. Leone performed 3 hour partial knee replacement surgery at Holy Cross Memorial Hospital. According to Sheldon, the pain after the surgery was significant, but after a couple of days it abated.   He is presently getting physical therapy, and is already participating in aquatic classes. "It has only been four weeks, and I feel like a new person."

His advice to others is: Don't wait to get this done. If you need it, you need it. This type of knee damage is not going to get better on its own.  ~ This active 69 year old is now free of knee pain!

With a partial knee replacement patients experience a much faster recovery because less dissection is done and structures are not violated. Read more about this procedure at holycrossleonecenter.com

National Squash Title Winner thanks Badia Hand to Shoulder Center

With great joy Karen Meakins recently wrote Dr. Alejandro Badia, to let him know of her recent athletic achievements.  Karen won her 12th National Title, a record for this sport. This amateur athlete and squash coach from Barbados suffered from a partially torn shoulder tendon that prevented her from playing. On October of 2011 she decided to get it corrected after her local physician recommended she see Dr. Alejandro Badia, upper body orthopedic surgeon in Miami.  After the procedure she had intense occupational therapy for 3 months followed by gym work with a trainer.  She says the success of the procedure has resulted in her being able to get back to competitive squash.

Karen is grateful for Dr. Badia's surgical skills and for his open communication style. His habit of returning emails promptly and answering her questions has given her tremendous comfort during the recuperation stages.  She tells us "I think I am very lucky because I had a great surgeon, a great therapist and a great trainer. I am back to 90% mobility right now and my shoulder is stronger than it has ever been because of all the hard work in the gym. I plan to play in the World Masters in July which was always my goal post surgery. I wasn't sure even 2 weeks ago that I would be ready to play but I am extremely satisfied with where my shoulder is right now so I have decided to enter."    Go team Karen!
