The Impact of PET on Breast Cancer

PET ScanFound unsuspected anxillary and supraclavicular disease. Now with a base line PET study it allows the physician to measure the impact of chemotherapy as early as the first cycle. Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CPT)  Symptoms and Surgical Methods for Relief

Dr. Badia
Dr. Badia specializes in hand, shoulder and upper body orthopedic

CPT is an extremely common as well as misunderstood condition. In recent years, it has received much coverage in the press but is still not completely understood even by the scientific community. Despite popular opinion, this condition is not caused by using a keyboard. However, if one has a predisposition to this condition, repetitive activity such as typing can aggravate it. CPT simply means that there is compression of the median nerve in the hand. This nerve sits inside a tunnel in the hand whose floor and walls consist of bones known as carpal bones. The roof of this tunnel is a structure called the transverse carpal ligament. Besides the nerve, there are nine tendons which flex the fingers and thumb and run in the canal. When lining around these tendons is inflamed, there is less space for the nerve and it becomes compressed. This compression of median nerve leads to the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The CyberKnife Treats Pancreas Cancer

The CyberKnifeSystem has been used to treat pancreatic cancer in patients who are poor surgical candidates, those who refuse surgery and in patients for whom surgery or other treatments have failed. Two clinical studies from Stanford University have shown the growth of pancreatic tumors in patients with advanced disease has been controlled by CyberKnife radiosurgery. One study estimated the six-month survival at 80 percent and the estimated one-year survival at 15 percent. In another preliminary study, CyberKnife treatment was shown to provide pain control in 85 percent of the treated patients.   The CyberKnife Center of Miami was the first CyberKnife program in the South East United States. The Miami treating team has performed the largest volume of combined cases (intracranial and extracranial) of any Florida CyberKnife facility, and is noted for its vast radiosurgical experience. Treatments for pancreas cancer can include multiple fractions. Typically patients get to return home in 7 to 10 days and then receive follow up care from their local physician.
