Your Mammogram Looks Suspicious: Don't Freak Out!
|
Many routine mammograms can turn into anxiety producing events, once a woman gets a call or letter from the doctor stating that an abnormality was found. This should not be cause for alarm. The reality is that breast imaging capabilities have improved and physicians are better trained, so more is being detected on a screening mammogram than in previous years. According to the American Cancer Society, about 10% of women are called back for further tests. Of these, only 8% to 10% of women will need a biopsy, and 80% of the biopsies turn out to be benign. Encouraging statistics!
Follow up tests may include a diagnostic mammogram, an ultrasound, a breast MRI and/or biopsy.
It is preferable that these follow up tests be conducted at the same imaging center and read by the same physician. The results of these follow up tests are known fairly quickly, and afterwards your physician may ask that you increase the frequency of your mammograms. This is considered good standard of care and indicates your doctor is on top of the latest preventive measures for conquering breast cancer.

The CyberKnife continues to be an effective tool for treating brain tumors without surgery

Over 100,000 patients have been treated worldwide with the CyberKnife. South Florida is fortunate to have 2 successful free-standing outpatient programs: The CyberKnife Center of Miami and the CyberKnife Center of Palm Beach have performed more procedures than any other center in Florida. The CyberKnife system offers patients a safe non-invasive alternative to brain cancer surgery, and can be used for brain tumors that are considered inoperable because of their location in the head, for those patients who cannot undergo brain cancer surgery due to their poor medical condition, or who refuse surgery. The CyberKnife System also can treat benign, or non-cancerous, tumors and other conditions, such as trigeminal neuralgia and arterial venous malformations (AVMs). CyberKnife brain cancer treatments are typically performed on an outpatient basis over a period of one to five days, requiring no overnight hospital stays. Most patients experience minimal to no side effects with a quick recovery time. Out of town patients typically spend 4 days getting their images, planning and treatment in South Florida. Brain tumor patients wear a customized soft mesh face mask which helps stabilize the head. A typical session lasts 45 minutes.
