The President Nominates Sara Manzano-Diaz to a Top Post at DOL |
President Barack Obama formally announced that Sara Manzano-Diaz is his nominee to serve as Director of the Women's Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor. The mission of the Women's Bureau is to improve the status of wage-earning women, improve their working conditions, increase their efficiency, and advance their opportunities for profitable employment.
Sara Manzano-Diaz was one of two presidential nominees announced by the White House. In making the announcement, the President said, "The individuals announced today will play an important role in my administration, each bringing an impressive background to their respective roles. I look forward to working with them in the coming months and years.
Sara Manzano-Diaz has compiled an extremely impressive resume and is arguably one of the most qualified Latinas in America today with impeccable credentials. She has more than 25 years of federal, state, and judicial experience including 16 years in senior management. Most recently, Sara was appointed by Governor Edward G. Rendell as Deputy Secretary for Regulatory Programs at the Pennsylvania Department of State, making her the highest-ranking Latina in Pennsylvania state government. In her current position, Ms. Manzano-Diaz is responsible for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public by overseeing the licensure of approximately 1 million professionals.
Previously, Sara Manzano-Diaz served as Deputy General Counsel for Civil Rights and Litigation at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, where she enforced fair housing, civil rights, and anti-discrimination laws. While at HUD, she implemented a compliance agreement against the largest public housing authority in the country that resulted in the creation of 9,000 disabled housing units in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. She also served as an Assistant Attorney General in New York and a Pro Se Attorney in the New York State Judiciary. Sara Manzano-Diaz holds a Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations and Communications from Boston University and a Law Degree from Rutgers University School of Law. |

NHLA Calls on Senate Leaders to Confirm Latino Nominees |
In a letter to Senate Leaders Harry Reid (D) and Mitch McConnell (R), the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) is calling upon the Senate leaders to do everything within their power to allow the confirmation of two high-ranking Latino nominees to move forward. Senate procedures are being used to delay the confirmation of Tom Perez as Associate Attorney General for Civil Rights and Arturo Valenzuela as Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemispheric Affairs. Perez was nominated on March 31 and Valenzuela on May 12. When confirmed, Perez and Valenzuela will become two of the highest ranking Latinos in the Obama administration.
NHLA is a coalition of 30 national and regional organizations that has been working closely with the Obama administration to identify and recommend highly qualified Latinos for presidential appointments. NHLA has also submitted an agenda to the administration on public policy issues pertaining to education, health, employment, immigration, civil rights, economic empowerment, and government accountability.
