President Obama Takes on the Nay-Sayers
Obama Congress
With "the fierce urgency of now" rapidly giving way to "the fierce urgency of no," given the adverse impact of raucous town hall meetings and irresponsible politicians, President Obama launched a new initiative last week to regain control of the national debate over health care reform in his second address to Congress. Americans were clearly inspired and emboldened by the President's address, which set the record straight on what reform will include and not include.

The President can still get a decent health care reform bill passed if he sticks to the campaign mode that we saw in Minneapolis last weekend and rallies the tens of millions of people who supported him because he promised to reform health care, if he continues to remind people who already have health care coverage that they are the ones at risk of losing all or some of their coverage, and if he continues to call out those who engage in distorting the facts to instill fear and anger among the gullible who allow themselves to be manipulated.
NHLA Issues Press Release
on Health Care Reform
NHLANHLA (the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda), an ad hoc coalition of 30 national organizations united to advocate on behalf of the Latino community on issues pertaining to employment, housing, education, civil rights, immigration and health, last week issued a press release on our collective position on health care reform.

Among the specific provisions addressed in the press release, the NHLA called for: creation of a Health Insurance Exchange for all states, Puerto Rico and U.S. Territories with a standard benefits package and a public option; integrate all persons lawfully residing in the U.S. into the Health Insurance Exchange and qualified health care plans and eliminate the 5-year waiting period for Medicare; strengthen the employer-sponsored insurance system to generate more affordable health insurance coverage with consumer protections for individuals, families and employers of all sizes; and ensure that the Hispanic community is provided real access to health care and that effective outreach to persons of Limited English Proficiency occurs to increase their participation in federally funded health care services.
