Annual Dinner - Henry Cisneros Delivers, Reg Weaver Honored
Interns and Cisneros
USHLI celebrated its Annual Dinner before a full house at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on August 14. Henry Cisneros, the most prominent Latino leader in America today, delivered enlightening and emboldening remarks on the nation's rapidly changing demographics and the challenges and opportunities facing the Latino community.

Mr. Reg Weaver, the out-going President of the National Education Association, received USHLI's inaugural International Trailblazer Award, for his extraordinary accomplishments in reforming America's education system, gaining respect and justice for all personnel in the field of education, for his lifetime of distinguished service as a teacher and president of the largest union in the nation, and for his impact on education throughout the world.

Our 2008 Outstanding Intern Award was presented to Ms. Yanira Solano and Mr. Roberto Larios, for their exemplary participation in USHLI's 21st Century Leaders Internship Program.

Latino Students Ready to SALSA!
Latino Vote SignLatino student organizations throughout the United States continue to sign up for SALSA, the Strategic Alliance for Latino Student Action. As SALSA partners, Latino student organizations are receiving nonpartisan Latino Vote buttons, posters, pens, and banners to help them register their fellow students to vote and earn discounts to attend one of USHLI's four regional student leadership conferences or national conference. After the October 6 deadline, students will have weekend nonpartisan Get-Out-the-Vote parties using their free minutes on cell phones, text messaging, and email to contact their fellow students.

Click here for more information on SALSA and the appropriate USHLI staff will contact you.

USHLI Supports AARP's "Divided We Fail" Campaign
Divided We Fail logo USHLI urges all Latinos to join AARP's "Divided We Fail" campaign, along with millions of other Americans, by signing a nonpartisan pledge card and supporting only those candidates who will move beyond the usual generalities and give us action, answers and accountability on health and financial security. In signing the pledge card, USHLI President Dr. Juan Andrade said, "the overwhelming majority of the nearly 50 million Americans without health care or adequate health care are Latino, and those of us who care about that fact have a moral responsibility to hold our elected officials accountable."
