Greg DeLuna - September Wellness Champion!

Greg DeLuna is a Child Support Officer-II Bilingual in the Department of Child Support Services and has worked for the County for 13 years!

Greg was nominated by numerous colleagues who describe him as energetic, dedicated, motivational, fun and humble.  They also say:
"Greg provides numerous support and kindness to those who want help and support."

"Since the first Thrive Across America competition, Greg has committed himself to an overall fitness program.  He works out most mornings prior to work and constantly encourages others to join him.  During breaks he encourages us to walk with him. He inspires me to workout even when I do not feel like it. He also sends inspirational e-mails that encourage us to keep trying."

"Greg remains cheerful and has a great sense of humor, even when overloaded with work. He is fun to be around"

"Whenever you want something to snack on, Greg has a basket of fruit in his office that is free for the taking. He'll join anybody for a stroll, you don't have to be in a group/click.  After work he walks dogs for the local animal shelter.  Greg not only cares about his two legged friends, but his four legged ones too."

Wellness Program: What inspired you to take on healthy changes in your lifestyle or is it always something you incorporated?

Greg:  I was the geeky high school kid that spent his breaks in the library. In college and after, I would avoid any type of athleticism. Then my younger sister completed a marathon when she turned 25 and watching her train, I knew I wanted to do the same before reaching 30.  Since that time I have pushed myself to do something healthy for my body each day.  I finished my first marathon after the official cut off time with blisters on the soles of my feet, but that was my motivation to do better next time.

Wellness Program:  We hear you are dedicated to working out regularly. Can you tell us more about what you do to stay fit and activites you participate in that support your health.

Greg:  I find it important to schedule time. It never works for me when I tell myself, "I'll go to the gym sometime tomorrow". I have incorporated an hour a day into my daily routine. To me, it doesn't matter what I do during that hour. It can be running, lifting weights or swimming depending on how I feel but it's very important to schedule that hour.

Wellness Program:  What is your key to success?

Greg:  I don't see my change in lifestyle as 'success'. Rather I like to think of it as a continuation of my everyday living. I think the old saying; 'three weeks makes a habit' is true. If I stop working out, within two to three days my body begins telling me it's time to go jogging. Maybe I have restless leg syndrome, but even a simple hour long walk makes me feel good.

Wellness Program: What does wellness mean to you?

Greg:  Wellness is having a positive lifestyle and outlook in life. For me physical exercise helps me mentally. It reduces my stress and that hour of jogging/walking helps me think my troubles out or fantasize, visualize or just daydream.

Wellness Program:  Can you offer some advice to others hoping to become more active?

Greg: Just as we humans come in all body types and sizes we need to find our individual wellness. For some, a ten minute walk is a start.  Like Nike says, "Just do it".  Take it at a nice pace, but just do it!

Wellness Program:  Any favorite quote or mantra?

Greg:

The hardest part is starting (when running).
Half of the battle is getting there (when going to the gym).
Both remind me that once I start the rest is easy!

Way to go Greg!
