NJDEP IMPLEMENTS NEW COMBUSTION ADJUSTMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR BOILERS
In 2007, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) began a five-year phase-in of a new requirement for boilers of certain sizes to have an annual adjustment to the combustion process. As of 2010, an annual combustion adjustment is required for all boilers rated at five million BTU per hour (5 MMBTU/hr) or more, and an annual combustion adjustment report must be submitted for all boilers rated at 10 MMBTU/hr or more. In 2012, the annual combustion adjustment report will be required for all boilers rated at 5 MMBTU/hr or more.
The combustion adjustment process includes the following:
- Inspecting the burner and cleaning or replacing burner components as necessary
- Inspecting the flame pattern and adjusting the burner to optimize the flame pattern
- Inspecting the system controlling the air-to-fuel ratio, ensuring that it is correctly calibrated and functioning properly
- Minimizing total emissions of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide
- Measuring the concentrations of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and oxygen before and after the adjustment is made
There is no certification necessary to perform the combustion adjustment. It can be performed by the boiler owner, the boiler operator, or a boiler contractor. The combustion adjustment need only be performed at one firing rate, preferably the firing rate at which it is most commonly operated.
Additional information can be found on the NJDEP website.
If you need assistance with achieving compliance with these or other air permitting requirements, please contact Elizabeth Bouvier, PE, CIH.

ARCHITECTS LEAGUE OF NORTHERN NEW JERSEY HOSTS WORK OF LOCAL ARCHITECTS
An exhibit featuring the works of local architects was held May 1st-14th at the Art Center of Northern New Jersey in New Milford. Two of LAN's projects, the H.B. Whitehorne Middle School and Alpine School, were displayed as part of the event. The exhibit was sponsored by the Architects League of Northern New Jersey, and was put together to showcase the many facets of architects' creative talent in a format that best exemplifies their work and personalities. Entries ranged from built and un-built projects, hand sketches, sculptures, photographs, models, etc. Due to the tremendous turn-out and interest, this may become an annual event for the Architects League, and we congratulate them on their success.

LAN SUPPORTS THE
SURROUNDING COMMUNITY
 | | Little Sisters Joann Van Splinter (second from left) celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Little Sisters of the Poor Auxiliary |
Through the years LAN has supported numerous causes that are important to our employees and the local community. One example is LAN staff member Joann Van Splinter's service to the Auxiliary of the Little Sisters of the Poor for St. Joseph's Home for the Elderly. The mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor is to care for the disadvantaged elderly while the mission of the Auxiliary is to provide financial aid to St. Joseph's Home. LAN has supported the Little Sisters for more than 20 years through the efforts of Mrs. Diana Lacz, wife of LAN founder Mr. John A. Lacz. Joann assisted Mrs. Lacz behind the scenes for many years until officially joining the Auxiliary in 2005. In this time, Joann has attended monthly meetings and helped plan and organize fundraisers, such as the Christmas Boutique and the Spring Fashion Show. Next year, Joann will also serve as the Auxiliary's Corresponding Secretary. LAN has supported this service by providing Joann with paid time off to attend the meetings and fundraisers and by allowing the use of LAN's resources to prepare for the fundraisers. LAN also has made donations to the Auxiliary, such as a basket for the tricky tray auction at the recent Spring Fashion Show.
Similarly, Kim Hauser has been a member of the Hawthorne Rotary Club for 20 years, during which she has served three terms as President and many years as the Public Relations chairperson. The Rotary's mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Through the Rotary, Kim personally has given dictionaries to each third-grade student in the Hawthorne public schools for the last five years - about 1,500 dictionaries! LAN grants Kim paid time off to attend Rotary meetings and events. In the past, several LAN employees have joined Kim in Rotary-sponsored clothing drives to assist families displaced by fire.
LAN's Financial Manager, Enza Conforti, has been involved with the Northern NJ/Rockland chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) since her nephew was diagnosed with the disease in 2003. The goal of the JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through research. LAN supports Enza's fundraising efforts through the "Johnny Rockets" team.
As we reported in Newsletter 09, LAN strives to support the development of future professionals. Three LAN staff members mentored a team of students from Teaneck High School through the ACE Mentor Program of America, Inc. The team's project was the design of a hypothetical Super Dave & Buster's on a former movie theater site. The students' tasks included site evaluation, zoning analysis, respecting environmental restrictions, site layout and landscaping, parking design, floor plans, and elevations. The mentors recently had the pleasure of seeing the students present their design to the other ACE Mentor Program teams and to the Teaneck Board of Education. Words cannot express the pride that the mentors felt as they watched the students demonstrate what they had learned through the program. Several members of the team will be pursuing engineering degrees in college next year.
These are but a few examples of LAN's commitment to the local community. We hope to highlight the continuing community-involvement efforts of LAN and our staff in future newsletters!
