Fair Lawn HS courtyard certified as Backyard Wildlife Habitat
As reported in the Community News, the National Wildlife Federation has designated the interior courtyard at Fair Lawn High School as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat. The District's Science Supervisor, Ron Durso, applied for the designation, as the courtyard helps attract birds and insects, and provides "food, water and cover through sustainable practices." The space had once been a paved parking lot with temporary trailers and utility poles before LAN redesigned the entire area as part of a 2006 building addition (pictured below). The addition was published in the November 2008 issue of American School & University for Outstanding Design. More information regarding the certification of habitats is available on the National Wildlife Federation website. LAN Officers Ronald Panicucci and Steven Ramiza have had their backyards certified as Wildlife Habitats by the NWF as well. LAN employees mentor high school students
LAN Associates staff members Elizabeth Bouvier, Meghan Burbank, and Ken Ross are participating in mentoring a team of students from Teaneck High School who are interested in pursuing careers in architecture, construction, and engineering. The team was organized through the ACE Mentor Program of America, Inc. and the Forum of Teaneck Public Schools. The ACE Mentor Program is a national organization whose mission is to engage, excite and enlighten high school students to pursue careers in the integrated construction industry through mentoring. The Forum is a program funded by the New Jersey Department of Children & Families, the Teaneck Board of Education, the Township of Teaneck, and the Bergen County Department of Human Services. The Forum's mission is to inspire the positive emotional, physical, social, and academic development of Teaneck's residents aged 13-19 through comprehensive easily accessible services.
The team began meeting in November, and will continue to meet through March. As part of the program, the students will have the opportunity to learn about the professions of architecture, construction, and engineering, and will visit engineering laboratories at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. The students will also select a design project that they will work on and present to the other ACE Mentor Program teams in northern New Jersey in the spring.
In addition to LAN's three staff members, the mentoring team includes personnel from Fairleigh Dickinson University, along with two architects and a construction manager from other firms. |
