A message from Don O'Quinn ~
Head of School
| |

The weeks are flying as we make our way through the Spring semester.
For Yavneh's students, every season is a time for caring and giving, for reaching out and connecting with their community, be it within our close zip codes, or thousands of miles away.
Our Students4Students proudly presented their now annual movie night, raising thousands of dollars to build their second school for students they will likely never meet.
On May 24, at 7pm, our Helping Hands for the Homeless students will host a Dessert Raffle in Pollman Hall, to support those who benefit of the services of Family Gateway, which provides transitional housing and comprehensive services to homeless families in Dallas County.
AP exams upon us, and the days waning, our seniors having returned from the March of the Living, and they are now preparing for their June 3rd commencement, to date with more than $1.5 million in scholarship monies awarded. This, just as our Freshman class for the fall is rounding out and completing registration, tours, and interviews. SAT and ACT preparation and exams are on the minds of our Juniors, now preparing for the tradition of the college search and application process and we are proud that Yavneh's students have earned among the highest verbal and writing scores on those exams.
Yavneh's students; they learn, they grow, they prepare meaningfully for their own lives and futures, while never missing the chance to make the lives of those in need, also their priority.
I'm very proud of our students, of the faculty that supports them, and of our greater Yavneh family that reaches out, and reaches within, to make Yavneh everything that it can be.
The IS the Yavneh family!

| Faculty Feature ~ Dr. David Portnoy |
|
Yavneh Academy of Dallas' Board of Directors, its Faculty, and the Yavneh Family is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. David Portnoy as its incoming Head of School, effective June 18, 2012. Dr. Portnoy succeeds Donald R. O'Quinn, who has served in the position since agreeing to hold an "interim" role, in 1998.
"As my six-month 'interim' position comes to an end, 14 years later, I couldn't be more proud of the reputation that Yavneh Academy holds and the success of its students, current and its alumni," said Mr. O'Quinn. "As Dr. Portnoy comes to our Campus, I feel more than confident that he will reign toward a positive future, and guide Yavneh Academy to its ever-growing potential."
"Yavneh's reputation is that it is a magical and endearing place. Indeed, through this process I've learned this is an incredibly special place with a terrific balance of General and Judaic studies, extracurricular activities, and a commitment to tikun olam, to saving this world. The students here are so impressive," said Dr. Portnoy. "I look forward to being here, to leading this school, and to both keeping its accomplished core, and fulfilling its promise."

Dr. Portnoy, married to Rabbi Dr. Shira Lander, and the father of two college-age sons, received a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Yale University. Additionally, he earned graduate degrees from Seton Hall University, Johns Hopkins University, UCLA School of Law, and he participated in the Principals' Center Institute in Educational Leadership and as an Avi Chai Summer Graduate Fellow at Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Most recently, Dr. Portnoy has served as Head of School and Consultant to Houston's Emery/Weiner School, a college-preparatory Jewish day school with 460 students in grades six to 12. Previously, a teacher and in numerous leadership positions at Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School, at his alma mater, the Gilman School, both in Baltimore, MD, and at the Harvard School (now Harvard Westlake) in Los Angeles, Dr. Portnoy was also an Undergraduate Admissions Counselor at the University of Pennsylvania.
"It has not been an easy search to find someone to fill Don's shoes and his desk," said Dan Prescott, President of the Board of Directors. "Pam Fine and Carol Kreditor and their teams were committed to finding the man, and I'm confident that in Dr. Portnoy, we have."
"The support of everyone associated with Yavneh Academy has been tremendous, delightful, and very meaningful," said Dr. Portnoy. "I look forward to the future and wish us all to go from strength to strength, as we carry on."

Class of 2012 ~ Adina Mandelcorn "Yavneh is: Close. Fun. Passionate Teachers." |
|
"I came to Yavneh because I wanted to carry out my education, and my living, of my Jewish tradition," said Adina Mandelcorn. "I feel like the administration of Yavneh does a good job, with our dual-curriculum, of getting all the General Studies and Judaic classes taught in our split day."
"From 8 to 5 our Judaic classes always have a General Studies aspect to them, and vice versa," she said, "we really are taught how to bring our Jewish life into almost everything we do and learn."
Accepted to Adelphi University, St. Edwards University, Stern College at Yeshiva University, University of Hartford, University of Kansas, Adina will attend Stern College and she hopes to someday become a psychologist. Calling most of the teachers she's had throughout her education, at Akiba and Yavneh, her role models, it's the manner in which they'd been there for her, and the support in helping her accomplish her goals, that will last beyond the classroom lessons.
"Adina is a sociable individual with a great deal of knowledge," said Judaic Studies faculty member, Rabbi Howard Wolk. "She is able to relate different pieces of information and see their link, showing that she has an ability to analyze things. Her outgoing demeanor and ability to relate well to others will serve her well in future endeavors."
"All of the teachers here care about their students and it doesn't matter what you need, and the end of the school day isn't the end of their help," said Adina, who, born in California, moved to Dallas with her family, her parents Rochelle and Yehoshua, and sisters Gila '07 and Yocheved, while still an infant.
A member of Shaare Tefilla, Adina has been involved with the local chapter of YACHAD, that which provides programming for Jewish youth living with special needs. Summer adventures have included going back to the west coast to visit family, and working as a counselor at Akiba's Camp Mazal.
A former Yavneh Bulldog, playing on the school's Volleyball and Tennis teams, she has also been a member of Hashinui/Environmental Club, HELP/Helping Everyone Live Peacefully, and the Bulldog Spirit Club.
"Adina is exactly the kind of person we love to draw to Yavneh Academy," said Assistant Principal Dr. Tim Cloward. "She is an extremely sweet young lady, who is quiet, respectful, and she works very hard. Adina, who has formed some very tight bonds with her fellow students and who has earned the respect of the faculty for the quality of her character, takes care of business and is especially dedicated."
Dedicated, and taking care of business - Adina will take those qualities on to live meaning and care.

| Class of 2012 ~ Ari Margolies
"Yavneh is: Free-Spirited. Unique. Encouraging."
|
|
"Ari always kept me on my toes, never simply accepting something if it didn't make sense to him," said former Judaic Studies faculty member, Raffi Rosenzweig. "His humor and readiness to express his opinion helped cultivate an open atmosphere in class and his passionate curiosity stimulates conversation with anyone he speaks to."
Ari transferred to Yavneh as a Sophomore, a decision he calls refreshing as, for the first time he felt comfortable in a school. "I could not have dreamed up a better school," he said. "The education we receive in both Judaic and secular subjects is impeccable, the teachers are accommodating, friendly, and adept in the subjects they teach, and I love the kids here, with each and every one bringing something unique to the table."
Accepted to Eckerd College, St. Edwards University, University of Kansas, and the University of Tampa, Ari will spend next year in Israel, before deciding his future. Deeply passionate about politics, and one to follow current events diligently, as well as one with a mind full of prospective inventions and business concepts, Ari is considering a future as a politician or as an entrepreneur.
A Dallas native, Ari is the son of Joan and
Mike, the brother of Rafi, David '97, Andrew, and Daniel. A member of Congregation Ohr Hatorah, and also Congregation Shaare Tefillah, Ari has been committed to his role as columnist for The Bulldog Print, writing his free-spirited "Ari's World."
"Trying to stay on top of Ari's curiosity is a lot like herding cats: you might think you've got a handle on where his questions are leading until he throws the ultimate, 'But, no, excuse me, I was really wanting to know ...," said Journalism Adviser, Sandy Hall-Chiles. "One of the most self-effacing young people I have ever known, Ari would be easy to dismiss as a teenager typically cynical about authority until you have a meaningful conversation with him. He is alarmingly honest about himself: what comes into his brain is usually out of his mouth before the filter sets in. But instead of being a negative, his natural charm and disarming deference make him a delight to work with."
Ari's leadership has served many well as he's worked at Camp Dora Golding in Pennsylvania, and founded Camp Awesome, a summer camp for boys based at Ohr Hatorah, in 2009. To further his own interests, Ari has used summer breaks to intern with State Representative, Stefani Carter.
A Bulldog athlete, who played both soccer and JV basketball, Ari has also served as a member of Students Against Terrorism, and co-authored and produced the Class of 2012's Senior Purim Shpiel. "There's so much that's unique about Yavneh, and everyone here, and it was fun to write. We put a lot of hard work into it, and it we were glad it was appreciated."
Ari will long be remembered at Yavneh - a place that he made his home, that he found his peace.

Class of 2012 ~ Jordan Prescott "Yavneh is: Family. Bulldog. Leaders." |
|
A Dallas native, Jordan is the son of Stephanie and Dan, and younger brother to Ethan '10 and Alex. A graduate of Akiba Academy, attending Yavneh was a smooth transition, as Jordan was connected to much of his class since the age of two, and a continuance of Jewish education, was important to him.
"When the Rabbis, in Ethics of the Fathers, said 'Be sure to greet all with a friendly face,' they were certainly talking about Jordan Prescott. He is always the first to greet our visitors and newcomers with a warm smile and a friendly word," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal and Director of Judaic Curriculum.
"It would be impossible to find a more kindhearted and friendlier person on the entire campus than Jordan," said Rabbi Tannenbaum. "He has also grown from a shy timid freshman, trying to establish a name for himself, into one of the leaders of the school."
"Yavneh's dual-curriculum trains us for a rigorous college curriculum," said Jordan, who, accepted to the University of Indiana, University of Georgia, University of Wisconsin, with that training is certainly prepared for success, as a business major, after first spending a year in Israel.
A volunteer at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, Jordan has also served a more global community by volunteering in Fiji, through Rustic Pathways summer programs, for which he helped build a school and teach English to some local children.
A member of Congregation Shaare Tefilla and BBYO's Lewis chapter, Jordan's leadership skills have been developed through his association as a Student Council Class Representative, with Students Against Terrorism, the Bulldog Print, Mock Trial, as a Student Ambassador, Uniting Students of Dallas, and as a Yavneh Basketball Bulldog player and Captain and Yavneh's 1st place record holder with 384 assists and second in scoring with 1771 career points.
"Yavneh gives its students experiences they couldn't get anywhere else," he said. "The support that I received from the administration, and the ability to lead programs, has given me experiences that I can take anywhere."
Jordan's high scores, on and off the court, will always rank in Yavneh's record books.

Class of 2012 ~ Mina Pulitzer "Yavneh is: Family. Safe. Challenging." |
|
The daughter of Randy, and the late Margot, Mina is the youngest sibling to Miles '10, Samuel '07, and Jessica '04. She is a member of Shaare Tefilla, and a graduate of Akiba Academy who has great regard for the depth of courage, and devotion, that her grandparents had for Jewish education, through their being a great part of the founding, and success, of both Akiba and Yavneh.
"Yavneh truly is a home away from home," said Mina, whose walk across the stage at commencement closes a chapter, while opening another, for the Pulitzer family of four to graduate from Yavneh. "There are so many benefits, from the academics to the skills we learn to balance much - starting with the dual-curriculum, to the caring of our teachers, and the connections we make among our peers."
"I feel closer to my Yavneh friends than anyone," she said. "I think this is because we all lean on one another under any and all circumstances. Our long days and overlapping classes help us relate to one another, so it's easy to vent about the stresses we face. My friends are like brothers and sisters to me, people I know will be in my life forever."
Next year, Mina will have the chance to travel extensively, while learning about Jewish communities, as a participant of Kivunim. Once back in the U.S. she'll attend the University of Maryland, where she hopes to major in psychology, using her history as one to give advice, one to whom her friends come for help, as a base for her future.
Committed could be Mina's middle name as she has devoted herself to committees, teams, clubs, and programs of substance and meaning. A Student Council Class Representative during her Freshman and Sophomore years, this year she helped work to revitalize the Student Council program. She's served two years as President of Uniting Students of Dallas, on the board of Students Against Terrorism and Points for Peace, as a Student Ambassador, and member of Yavneh's Bulldog Golf, Volleyball, and Basketball teams.
Mina has played on the Lady Bulldogs Volleyball and Basketball teams since her freshman year, capping her experiences with this year's championship basketball season. "I'm so proud of the Lady Bulldogs," she said. "I love every girl on the team, our coaching staff, and this, my senior season with two championships and lifelong friends, was the best experience of my life."
"Being a part of the extra-curricular clubs at Yavneh means helping the homeless, keeping the world green, raising money for legal representation and it means making a difference in the lives of many," said Mina. "For myself, repping the school, I worry about how I behave and act, and I'm always wanting to live up to the Yavneh standard."
Mina, you have lived up to the standard, you have gone beyond, and you have set it anew.

Class of 2012 ~ Emily Rohan "Yavneh is: Difficult. Caring. Helpful." |
|
Oft called most likely to one day return to Yavneh as a Judaic Studies faculty member, her love and respect for her heritage, passed down from generations before her for whom Jewish Day schools in Dallas was a mission, is exactly why Emily chose to continue her Jewish education, beyond her early years at Akiba, and make Yavneh Academy her high school.
"My parents and grandparents made Jewish learning a priority for me for the last 16 years, and I'm very grateful for that," said Emily. "I'm so grateful for the opportunity, for my friends, and for the teachers who have been there for us."
"Though at times shy about displaying her talents and abilities, Emily, I predict, will recognize and embrace her strengths in the coming years," said English faculty member, Dr. Paula Harvey. "Perhaps I am biased, but I always thought that Emily would be an effective teacher, since she has the patience and understanding to help students. I will miss Emily's sweet smile and generous sense of humor."
Born in Dallas, Emily is the daughter of Terri and Richard and the sister of Sarah '10 and Abby. A member of Congregation Shaare Tefilla, where she has often babysat and worked with the youngest of congregants, and BBYO's Kravitz chapter, Emily has had a strong presence on the sport courts of the Schultz Rosenberg Campus; a member of the Lady Bulldogs Basketball team, a member and captain of the Volleyball team. She served as co-president of Students Against Terrorism, and been a member of Uniting Students of Dallas.
Away from the books, Emily's summers have included summer school, traveling to and with family, working at Akiba's Camp Kulanu, and time with her friends and her precious pup, Phoebe.
With a goal of continuing her Jewish studies, Emily will spend next year at the Tiferet Center for Advanced Torah Study for Women's Center in Ramat Beit Shemesh, and then return to Stern College of Yeshiva University, where she looks forward to studying toward an education degree. "My Judaic teachers at Akiba and Yavneh have been so helpful and inspiring, and I hope I can influence a child the way they have influenced me," she said. "I think I would like to someday teach high school students. I've had a number of role models and mentors and I know I wouldn't be the same without them."
"Emily is a beautiful, young woman who is a committed and strong Judaic Studies student," said Head of School, Don O'Quinn. "She is one to stand tall and, in a bind, I believe she will be there when needed."
Emily's future will likely revolve around helping those much younger than her to discover; discover Jewish life, living, and loving of the traditions she holds dear. That future, we hope, will keep her close.

Class of 2012 ~ Ben Romaner "Yavneh is: Relaxed. Highly Qualified Teachers. Family." |
|
"I can't imagine there being a better school than Yavneh," said Ben. "Where I was going to go to high school wasn't my decision, but the learning atmosphere and the sense of family here is unique and amazing. I'm very lucky that my family made this school, and this campus a possibility, and that this is where I've grown and prepared myself for my future."
"Ben is a personable, likable and witty young man. Beneath that laid-back exterior though is an excellent mind hard at work," said Assistant Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward. "Just as he will occasionally make a spectacular rebound and put-back on the basketball court, he will occasionally turn in work or make contributions to class discussion that reminds you of the truly great potential that he has. For Ben, the sky's the limit.
"Ben has always been a joy to have in class - he is smart and confident, well liked by peers and at the same time very humble and grateful," said Ben's Chemistry teacher, Lourdes Linzey. "Ben is as sharp as a needle when it comes to answering questions when put on the spot. He is a model student, not afraid to ask for help in times of need, always trying to understand a subject or concept, and encouraging other students to try their hardest and make the best of a difficult course."
"I'm so excited about the next step, about starting the part of life where I make decisions and even where I have to take care of myself," said Ben who will spend next year on Young Judaea's YearCourse program in Israel. "I want to tour, to learn, and to volunteer in Israel, and, since I've grown up at Camp Young Judaea, YearCourse makes sense for me."
Upon returning, Ben who was accepted to the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Oregon, and the University of California at Santa Barbara, is ready to ride down the path of adulthood, not yet sure where it will take him. "I'm not sure what I want to study, maybe business, but I do know that following my Grandfather, the most impactful role model in my life, will have something to do with my future."
A Sabra born in Israel, Ben made his way to Dallas at just three-months-old. The son of Jaynie and Ron, he is the oldest sibling of Dalya '14, Adina, and Micah, as well as Mesfin and Dejene Hodes, brothers-by-life. A member of Congregation Shaare Tefilla, Ben has been a strong player on the Yavneh Bulldog Basketball team and an involved board member of Students Against Terrorism and Uniting Students of Dallas.
The world has been Ben's classroom as he's traveled to Addis Ababa to live by the Hodes family, an extension of his own over the last decade, to Guatemala to a language immersion program, to Israel on CYJ's Machon experience, and beyond. "I've seen poverty and beauty in the same cities, I've learned about people, and about myself, and about what I can do to help others," he said. "I've been very lucky to learn as much as I have, this early in my life, and I hope I'll use these experiences as I go out on my own, to make my own choices."
As Ben makes those choices, he no doubt with have the Schultz Rosenberg Campus, and its connections personal and universal, tucked into the backpack of his soul.

BULLDOG PRIDE RINGS OUT IN YAVNEH'S 2012 VIDEO CONTEST
by Ed Gaudreault
Congratulations to Yavneh Sophomores Shanee Abouzaglo, Jason Epstein, Talia Klein, Dayla Romaner, Dania Tanur, and Jack Zondowicz, winners of the inaugural Yavneh Academy of Dallas "Bulldog Pride" Student Video Contest.
The student video contest was designed to provide a vehicle for Yavneh students to share their stories on how Yavneh Academy has positively impacted their lives. "Our group's goal was to showcase life inside of Yavneh," said Shanee, on behalf of her teammates. "The main message we wanted to portray was the spirit of welcome, warmth, and family that Yavneh embraces. It is what makes Yavneh significant and special in all students' hearts."
For the team's winning entry, input was compiled from Marketing Committee members & staff, which judges said demonstrated a "unique documentary storytelling approach to illustrate their love for the school," explained board member Dr. Mitchell Moskowitz.
The Bull Dog Pride contest was launched in January with submissions accepted through late February. Videos were judged on how well they addressed the topic, the quality of the production of the video, as well as the depth of thought and creativity of the video.
"The student video contest provides a forum and microphone for Yavneh students and offers specific insight into student life. While the video contest has ended,
the conversation and unique window into what Yavneh has to offer students
will continue to resonate and generate interest via the social media platforms that current and prospective parents and students can derive from these creative videos offerings," said Executive Board President Dan Prescott.
"The inaugural student video contest will continue to amplify the voice of the Yavneh students as they reflect on their own reality," said Head of School, Don O'Quinn "and on how our students are prepared to take action to make their communities and the world a better place."
Board member Jay Kleinman said he was impressed by the variety of perspectives represented in the entries, and the "thoughtfully channeled passion the entrants demonstrated in voicing their reality. By participating in the annual student video contest, this helps Yavneh students realize that their voices count and their realities matter."
The winning team will receive a $500 contribution to the charity of their choice. "As our Speech teacher Rhonda Russell helped us so much along the way, even inspiring us to enter the contest, we felt it most appropriate to donate our prize money to the organization she founded, Lake Highlands Military Moms," said Shanee. "Mrs. Russell, whose own son served a tour of duty in Iraq, is completely dedicated and passionate about her mission of helping our soldiers and their families."
