A message from Don O'Quinn ~
Head of School
| |

As we reel in the acceptance letters for the Class of 2o12, and ready for our too-soon farewells to this fine class, we are also meeting the members of the Class of 2016, those who will find their seats in our classrooms, come the Fall of 2012.
Prospective students are touring our classes, making daylong visits, meeting our students, getting to know our wonderful Schultz Rosenberg Campus, and getting a taste of their future.
We've shared Pizza & Bulldog Basketball, Open House venues, and, on Tuesday, February 21, the Moskowitz Family (Clara '13, Daniel '10, and Zac '08) will open its home, from 7 to 9pm, for a Yavneh Parents Parlor Meeting.
(email khcohen@yavnehdallas.org for more information)
We ask you, our Yavneh Parents, to please share this invitation with your friends and family! The best recommendation to future students, is the success of
those who have walked our halls, learned in our library,
prayed in our midst.
In addition to our prospective families, we also welcome our past, as Eliza Lavi Hochman '05, a graduate of St. Edwards University, has joined the coaching staff of the Lady Bulldogs, and can be found substituting in a number of our classrooms.
In two weeks we'll welcome many of the founders of Students Against Terrorism, and the Points for Peace Basketball Tournament, as Yavneh and the Dallas Jewish Community celebrates 10 years, $500,000, and a lot of good done in the world. I'm proud of our kids and you should be too.
This IS the Yavneh family!

| Faculty Feature ~ Lourdes Linzey
Chemistry & Physics
|
|
Yavneh's Lourdes Linzey, who has taught Chemistry and Physics at Yavneh since 2007, and who is one of the greatest smilers on campus, is a talent of much; a former Teacher of the Year, and semi-Finalist of DISD teaching honors, and one to watch for, or fore, on the golf course, as she's made a hole in one at the Los Rios Golf Club.
"I love being at Yavneh and I appreciate the respect our students and their families have for both their secular education, and the education of their heritage," said Mrs. Linzey, who wants all to know that while she may appear serious, once you get to know her, she is indeed the friendly and talkative sort. "I think a well-rounded education, that entails religious and academics, is very important."
"Working with our students and their families is a great opportunity at Yavneh," said Mrs. Linzey who has taught in DISD schools as well as in the Philippines and in Taiwan, and who is also on staff at Akiba Academy.
"Myself and all of the teachers here prepare our lesson plans knowing just how much can be done to pace our students. Here, the students really take advantage of meeting with teachers, and letting us help them understand and get any additional help they need."
Born in Manila, Philippines, Mrs. Linzey was a science maven from the start, a member of her high school'sMathematics & Science club. A first-prize winner in a science fair, in which she prepared a study of milk and candies from eggshells, she also traveled to other parts of Asia to study mathematics.
A summertime golfer (she'll play 36 holes without a blink, as long as the temp doesn't hit 100 degrees) and traveler, Mrs. Linzey also spends the "vacation" season, attending seminars to update and improve her teaching techniques.
Connected to her students, long after they leave her classroom, Mrs. Linzey has remained close to a 1994 first-grader, now a doctor, and another now in the Navy. "It is a great pleasure and honor to hear from old students," she said.
"It really gives me satisfaction in my chosen field, to see and know how my students are doing. Every day I hope that my students understand my teaching and that that they do well in my class, and then in their own future endeavors."

Class of 2012 ~ Jake Greif "Yavneh is: Unique. Student-oriented. Jewish." |
When Jake Greif remarks that the "Yavneh Family" is one of the reasons he chose to attend the school, certainly smiling is his grandmother Ann Rosenberg and watching over with pride, is his Opa, Marcus, z"l, whose names are proudly mark our Campus, and are enmeshed throughout its every fiber. "Yavneh IS a family and here, everyone gets involved, is active in extracurricular activities, and we are able to connect with each other, and with the faculty, all on a very personal level," said Jake, the son of Lizzy and Jules, and brother to Gabriella. A member of Congregation Shaare Tefilla, Jake, a second-year Co-Captain of the Yavneh Bulldogs, has played on the school's basketball team since his Freshman year. A founder of Yavneh's enthusiastic, but short-lived golf club, Jake has been deeply involved in the annual Points for Peace Basketball Tournament, Students Against Terrorism, Uniting Students of Dallas, and he is serving a third year as a Yavneh Student Ambassador. "When we talk about what a Yavneh student should be, we point to Jake Greif. It has been a real pleasure watching Jake grow through his high school career. He has grown from a shy and timid freshman to an outspoken and charismatic leader," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Yavneh's Associate Principal and Director of Judaic Curriculum. "Jake's leadership is evident almost everywhere in the school; in the classroom, basketball court, and even during prayers in the Beit Midrash. His opinion is the one that everyone seeks out before decisions need to be made and I am sure that has guidance will surely be missed." "Jake takes on challenges and tackles them with such ease," said Lourdes Linzey, a member of Yavneh's Science faculty. "This is definitely a trait one simply cannot learn, but develops throughout their lifetime. Jake is a great team player, he loves to be involved, and he leads many students in projects. I will remember his humor, dedication, charm and his ambition. As a graduate of Akiba Academy, which his grandparents also helped found 50 years ago, Jake counts most of his peers as lifelong classmates, including cousin Mina Pulitzer. "I've known most of my class since we were 'itty-bitty' and Mina all of my life. She is family, she is part of my Yavneh family, and the relationship we share is as unique as anything. When we go our separate ways, not seeing her, and the rest of the friends I've come close to along the way, will definitely be an adjustment. With days that, due to sports practices, often start with the sunrise and end well past sundown, Jake sees the dual-curriculum as arduous, but successful. "It's a long day but looking at past AP scores, the system works well. Students are successful here because we work hard and we learn how to balance our Judaic and General Studies courseload with extracurricular activities." "The relationships I have with the teachers and administrators at school are not like any you find anywhere else," said Jake. "Being able to talk and joke with them like you would your friends is something not many high school students get to experience." said Jake. Jake's summers don't have him slowing much, as he's attended visual arts courses, basketball training camps in Colorado and Dallas, prepared his college essays, and joined in on many family vacations. In 2011, he traveled with classmate Jordan Prescott on a Rustic Pathways adventure to Fiji, where he helped build septic tanks, he tutored children in the English language and he coached sports. Catching the travel bug while in Fiji, Jake will spend the 2012-2013 year on the Kivunim New Directions program. Already accepted to Tulane University, the University of Indiana, the University of Kansas, once back in the United States, Jake plans to study business, with the intent of making a career on the business side of the NBA. A fervent fan of the sport of basketball, on and off the court, and a lifetime fan of the Dallas Mavs, for those "in the know," Jake says, "I have studied the NBA as thoroughly as Mrs. Beilue has studied Lord of the Flies." Even that is an understated attempt to define his passion. Jake Greif, a legacy defined, and a gentle man as he carries that legacy forth. |

Class of 2012 ~ Jillian Herstein
"Yavneh is: Supportive. Engaging. Unparalleled." |
Wanting to incorporate Judaism into her everyday life, for Jillian, the choice to come to Yavneh, after attending the Fort Worth Hebrew Day School and graduating from the Levine Academy was an easy one. "From the time I was a newborn, Judaism has served an important role in my upbringing and, looking back on my high school experience, Yavneh has surpassed my wildest expectations," she said. "Not only have I received a private-school education, but I have been challenged in my studies, pushed to try new things, supported in a warm atmosphere, and accepted for who I am. My time at Yavneh has helped shape me as a student, as a young Jewish adult, and as a person." "Here, I've learned I will always be able to rely on our community, and for that I am grateful. My friends at Yavneh enriched my experience throughout high school, and made these difficult years more enjoyable and bearable," said Jillian. "High school can be a tough time and, when problems arose, the administration, faculty, and fellow peers took every measure in order to help me regain my composure." "Where else could I learn from the same math teacher four years in a row, and develop a stronger friendship with her each semester? And where else can I make an appointment with the Head Master, find 'a soft spot' on his couch, and listen as he imparts wise words and eternal truths?," said Jillian. "There is nowhere else where a student can drive with the rabbi to Starbucks and listen to Jewish music along the way? The teachers and administration at Yavneh are some of my greatest mentors, and I will continue turning to them for guidance beyond graduation.
Accepted to Tulane University, University of Indiana and the University of Texas, Jillian hopes to pursue a career in medicine, a choice Yavneh Science Chair, Dr. Steven Goldfine, would support. "Jillian is without question one of the most promising science students I have ever taught here at Yavneh," he said. "Her work shows just how much she loves learning since it always exceeds all expectations." A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jillian is the daughter of Bertta and Scott, and sister to Jacob '15. A longtime member of Congregation Beth Torah, Jillian ia a member of BBYO's Kravitz chapter, for which she's served as President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Membership Officer. On campus, Jillian is a Yavneh Student Ambassador, and a member of Students Against Terrorism, Students4Students, Health Occupations Organization, and she is a former Theatre Club member, having performed in "The Miracle Worker," and she is a former Bulldog Tennis Team player. Pen, or rather keyboard oft in-hand, Jillian has given much of herself to Yavneh's The Bulldog Print, serving as News Section Editor. "Jillian is a perfectionist. Anyone will tell you so," said Bulldog Print Advisor, Sandy Hall-Chiles. "What is refreshing about her is that she also sets a clear and realistic boundary between what she would love to do, and what she can realistically accomplish within the demands of her busy schedule. She's got a wicked sense of humor, in part fueled by that amazing wit, that always sends a laugh at the most opportune time." Jillian's summer's are spent working, and learning - be it at American Eagle Outfitters, or traveling the world - this year to BBYO's International Leadership Seminar in Israel and to Bulgaria with BBYO's Ambassadors to Bulgaria program where she, and 40 others, worked to clean a Jewish cemetery, played with children in an orphanage, and listening to the stories of Holocaust survivors. "We learned the true meaning of the saying, "kol Yisrael arevim zelaze," said Jillian. "All of Israel is responsible for one another." With students like Jillian, responsible for others in the world, all of the "others," will have the example bar set very, very high! |

Class of 2012 ~ Dejene Hodes "Yavneh is: Fun. Educational. Home." |
|
"I was looking for a great education, a great Jewish education, as I wanted to continue down what I believe is my path," said Dejene. "I came to Yavneh looking for a great education and the school has definitely lived up to its reputation. Here I found friends and a school where people aren't afraid to get to know each other. I came from another country, and yet I will leave Yavneh with family and friend forever." The teachers at Yavneh are dedicated to teaching and the students, they really want to learn. Together, anything can be done!," said Dejene. "Dejene is very sincere, he has come a long way to learn about Judaism and he is very passionate about it," said Associate Principal, Rabbi Maury Grebenau. "Dejene is a very positive presence at Yavneh, not just because of his love of Judaism, but because he chose this life, and because he respects it so." Dejene and his family, including his adoptive father, Dr. Rick Hodes, first connected to Dallas' Jewish community when, in 2002, Dr. Hodes, originally from New York, brought Dejene and his brother Sigmenew to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital. Both boys had suffered from tuberculosis of the spine, leaving them with severe angles in their backs. Doctors at Scottish Rite performed surgeries to fuse the boys' vertebrae, inserting rods, screws, and wires to give the boys added support. After learning the boys would need to be in Dallas for an extending period of time, and with one phone call to the then published Dallas Jewish Week, the family was connected to Jaynie Schultz and Ron Romaner. "When I first phoned, I had no idea that Dallas had such a wonderful, and active community, and no idea that I and my kids would feel so at home in a state where I'd yet to set foot," said Dr. Hodes. During their recoveries, and subsequent visits to Dallas, Dejene and his brothers, including Semegnew, Mesfin, Mekonnen at one point or another attended Yavneh and/or Akiba academies. Only brother Addis has missed our roster, yet distance between the Hodes family members, has never meant a feeling of being apart. "We are all a family," said Dejene. "My family in Addis Ababa, and my family with the Romaners and the Yavneh family - I have grown to love and care about so many people." Almost from the beginning, Dejene has been a strong member of Yavneh's Bulldog Soccer team, racing down the field, a leader of the sport. Talented at much, with a focus at Yavneh in visual arts, Dejene is a former Yavneh Students Celebration of Success Honoree by Monica Ribald, Yavneh's art teacher. "Dejene is a sweet, respectful, and a shining talent. He listens and tries to learn everything he can with motivation that is clearly visible." Dejene has also been a supportive member of Students4Students, whose leadership last year raised over $10,600 to build a classroom in Azezo, Northwestern Ethiopia. This year's project, with an April 2nd Movie Night at the Angelika Theatre at Mockingbird Lane, is to build a school in Darfur. Already accepted to Florida Institute of Technology, Goucher College, Hofstra University, and Wentworth Institute of Technology, money or how big my house is, but about how happy I am with what I have done that day." Whether Dejene's future has him studying and living in the United States or abroad, he will always have within him a family tree, now filled with branches far reaching, and roots spread wide. |

THE ELISA PROJECT VISITS THE LADIES OF YAVNEH ~~
Yavneh's young ladies welcomed Amy Wineinger, Program Coordinator at The Elisa Project, for a workshop focusing on the importance of a healthy body and positive self-image.
Ms. Wineinger's presentation emphasized the need to end "fat talk" (comments made with each other that focus on weight or dress size), nutrition (dieting vs. healthy eating and effects), eating disorders (definitions and prevention), and body image (past vs. present differences of how woman used to look vs. now).
* Shift the focus from weight to health. Choose to eat healthy and exercise
based on benefits that
are not related to weight.
* Understand the effect of media on self-image. It is important to be aware of photoshopped, airbrushing, and the unrealistic "thin ideal" of media images.
* Be aware of eating disorders and the extremities
that unhealthy behaviors can lead to.
* Understand signs and symptoms of eating disorders.
* If you think you know someone struggling with eating problems, it is important to let a counselor, teacher, or other adult know.
"It's important for our students to understand and become aware of disordered eating and prevention techniques, not only for their well-being, but so that they can look out for each other," said Sarah Warmbrodt, Yavneh's Health and Girls P.E. teacher. "By learning, they can make a difference in themselves and the lives of others by spreading awareness. Physical appearance and self-image has become increasingly important to many teenage girls. Learning ways to build their self-esteem and good health will, in turn, prevent negative thought patterns and behaviors from developing into eating disorders. These tools, and adopting healthy lifestyle choices in their lives now, can last a lifetime."

ANTI-BULLYING WORKSHOPS ~~
Yavneh's Confronting Hate workshops continued with North Texas/Oklahoma Regional Office Community Director, Roberta Clark, visiting with parents, faculty, and student groups. Long empowering bystanders, the ADL has worked tirelessly to provide education, and inspiration, in the fight against hate.
"Thirty years ago, the teasing was on the playground, kids were mean, but everyone went home and all was forgotten," said Ms. Clark. "With cyberbullying, it's NEVER over and the victimization is 24/7 and easily global. There is no 'neighborhood' teasing when the 'neighborhood,' involves the 'net.' The actions that have caused numerous suicides around the country, many by young people, can't be taken back, they can't be erased, they can't be fixed."
Ms. Clark advised parents to discuss school programs such as her workshops with their children. "If you don't have the discussions, you won't know your kids and they won't know how important they are to you," she said. "Parents should have ALL passwords to their students computers, phones, and other tools. The more you encourage honesty in a child, the less they are likely to even consider lying."
Ms. Clark's sessions included information and education about how students, and parents, should respect the internet, and recognize that anything typed onto a computer, is permanent. There are no backspace keys, no delete buttons, no erasures, that are guaranteed and even the most innocent can get caught with private information, photos, and other details online.
"When students are applying to colleges, for scholarships, for jobs - their history is just that, and it is theirs, it is available, and it can be found," warned Ms. Clark. "Your track record will determine your future."

10 YEARS OF STUDENTS AGAINST TERRORISM'S
POINTS FOR PEACE ~~
Yavneh's Students Against Terrorism celebrates its tenth anniversary, ten years of student-driven fundraising, supports thousands, affected by terrorism in Israel on February 26, with the 10th Annual Points for Peace Basketball Tournament, from 10am to 6pm at the Aaron Family Jewish Community Center.
The 3-on-3 basketball tournament is the foundation of Yavneh's Students Against Terrorism organization which has directed SAT Movie Nights, StandStrong4Israel bracelets, Roses for Israel, all of which have raised over $500,000 to support programs including Camp Koby, which provides a nurturing camp program, the Keren Malka Foundation which provides long-term no-cost loans of expensive medical equipment, to ATZUM, which distributes funds directly to families whose lives have been irreparably shattered, to One Family Fund's Adopt-A-Family, Sderot AfterShock and Lifeline to the North projects, and to the NATAL Israel Trauma Center.
The 2012 Students Against Terrorism beneficiary is Ohr Meir U'Bracha, the Terror Victims Support Center which provides packages and delivers food to 400 families each week, and hosts an Adopt-a-Family program to provide for victimized families' needs, home visits, a Big Brother program, and a Family Therapy Vacation program.
Yavneh Alum and SAT co-founders Ben Fine '05, Ben Kogutt '04,
Rachelle Krasoff '05, and Ariela Rosenberg Brafman '04 are proud as Yavneh seniors, and 2012 co-Presidents Jordan Prescott and Emily Rohan and board members Tamar Cohen '13, Rachel Goodman '13, Jake Greif '12, Itai Guttman '14, Kelly Herson '13, Adam Karnett '14, Benji Liener '12, Clara Moskowitz '13, Mina Pulitzer '12, Ben Romaner '12, and Dania Tanur '14 coordinate this year's anniversary event. Many of the board members, including Emily and Jordan, recall playing for many years, including in the first Points for Peace tournament, in 2003.

"I'm proud to say that a group without much supervision was able to create, execute, accomplish, and sustain so many amazing community wide events and entrepreneurial ideas," said Ben Fine, a graduate of St. Edwards University, now working in sales at Ecova, a sustainability and energy management company. "Mission statements, constitutions, and the allocation of funds have all been attended to year after year by students. Through these responsibilities, SAT has helped develop leaders who have gone on to challenging and great endeavors in the non-profit community and the business world."
In March of 2002, Ben Fine was one of the Yavneh students who attended the Yeshiva University sponsored Eimatai Conference, which focused on active leadership in helping the situation in Israel. The students returned to Dallas to share what they learned, and Students Against Terrorism was born. In the last decade, SAT's efforts have hosted the sale of close to 40,000 StandStrong4Israel bracelets, which are worn around the globe, and the founding of Hoops 4 Hope, an Israel-based version of SAT's Points for Peace tournament.
"SAT has really exceeded all of our expectations, becoming a model for student advocacy and leadership across the nation," said Yavneh Assistant Principal, Chad Baruch, who has sponsored SAT since its inception. "The students involved have spurred other student groups, around the country, and brought tremendous respect to Yavneh."
"SAT is known for getting things done and we have a great and growing reputation. For the first time, this year's recipients came to us for help, and that's a big step," said Emily, speaking of Ohr Meir U'Bracha, whose services also include hospital visits, psychological and legal services, financial assistance, 24-hour emergency call-in services, and the provision of clothing and supplies. "I've seen how appreciative the people are and I know the difference SAT makes."
"I love our Jewish homeland and through most of my life, by playing in or planning for Points for Peace, I've been able to give some assistance there," said Jordan, who recalls his team winning the division title, in the tournament's first year, when he was in second grade.
"I've been to Israel three times and I've seen a lot of what is needed, and some of what we've done to help. I'm really proud to carry Students Against Terrorism into another decade of that support."
"For 10 years, SAT has been driven by the energy, passion, and determination of students. Yavneh truly empowers its students by encouraging SAT and similar student-led organizations to continue and grow," said Ariela Rosenberg Brafman, a graduate of Columbia University and a 2012 master's candidate at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at NYU. "I hope that students will continue to take SAT in new directions and to explore new ways to use their voices as student leaders."
Be one of the many, first grade to senior adults, to join in the spirit, celebration, and the making of the difference. Divisions are by grade and age for adults, with the return of the Special Edition Division, catering to those living with special needs. All participants will receive a prize package including a Points for Peace t-shirt, a Standstrong4Israel wristband, and other promotional items. Top fundraising teams and division prizes include, but are not limited to, floor seats at a Dallas Mavericks Game, Dallas Stars tickets, iPods, and more.
"This is what Yavneh's students do; they hear, they learn about issues, and they move on them - and they do so quickly," said Don O'Quinn, Yavneh's Head of School. "Our students make the lives of others better, and they make this world a much better place. Every year I'm proud of these kids and this year is no exception."
With a mission to demonstrate solidarity with Israel during difficult times, and to support victims of terrorism in Israel, Students Against Terrorism has from its start, been committed to raising awareness in the community about the devastating effects of terrorism on Israeli civilians, and to letting people of Israel know they are not alone. Ten years, $500,000 and thousands of those in the Dallas community and beyond, help to keep the mission, a vibrant one.
Early registration $20/team is open until February 19, but late registration, $30/team, will be accepted until February 24. All teams must also donate a minimum of $200 to support Ohr Meir U'Bracha, with all donations written to Students Against Terrorism. For more information, email emily.m.rohan@gmail.com or jordan_prescott@yahoo.com, and to register, visit www.pointsforpeace.org
KIDZ KORNER ~~
Kol Hakavod to siblings Alexis '14 and Bradley '13 Riche, who, through their group Kids Korner, collected 95 stuffed animals which were donated to the patients at Medical City Children's Hospital.
"Yavneh provides an immense amount of community service and we wanted to be sure our neighbors, just down the street, were included," said Bradley who delivered the toys during the winter break. "We are really proud of the response and thank everyone who made a donation!" HARVESTING HUNGER ~ ~
Congrats continued to Jordan Cope '14, who after volunteering with Bea's Kids, and realizing how many homeless people suffer from hunger, founded Harvesting Hunger! Jordan has spent the last many months collecting and delivering unopened and non-perishable food items, to the needy. Unopened jellos and fruit cups, granola bars, snacks and more, make for a meaningful meal for those who have nothing. Bins located in the lunchrooms of Yavneh and Levine academies provide for sustenance for those who have little. Kol Hakvod as well to pals Austin Jacoby '15 and Scott Lacritz '15, and his parents Lisa & James Cope, who have helped Jordan make deliveries! JFS FOOD DRIVE ~~
When the call to action comes to the students of Yavneh Academy, they answer and they do so quickly. The first of Yavneh's bi-annual food drives, to support the Food Pantry at Jewish Family Service, was, as always, a huge success.
Led by siblings Jori '12 and Jason '14 Epstein, of a family lifelong dedicated to the cause, Yavneh's students filled boxes by the grade, with the Junior Class bringing in the most cans, boxes, toiletries, and more. "The success of our food drive this year really excited me. The Junior Class won but everyone got involved. I've never seen Yavneh collect this much before," said Jori, whose mother Dia directed a student workshop at JFS. "We're so fortunate to come home to stocked pantries and meals on the table; its crucial we remember to help others who don't share in our good fortune."
"One of the most important ways our community can learn, even at the ages of these teens, is through experience. The reality is, in all likelihood, many of us know someone in need of our Food Pantry or other services," said Michael Fleisher, JFS' Executive Director."We all understand food and hunger, but most often, if they are coming to our pantry, there are usually other challenges; job needs, family illness, violence, substance abuse - we serve all of these issues, and many more. The truth is while these kids have 'made up' families during these workshops, many of the families they've created are fair descriptions of those who come to us in reality."
"Veahavta lera'acha komocha, love your neighbor as yourself," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal and Director of Judaic Programming. "Making sure others don't go without, not just the necessities of life, but some of the dreams and toys of life, is an absolute expression of that ideal."
Students created families for themselves; some with a grandparent or cousin living in the home, some were dealing with issues of job loss, health crises, teenage pregnancy, and other issues of financial despair. They then went "shopping" in the JFS Food Pantry as well, learning that fruit, milk, cheese items are among the first to leave the shelves.
Typic al allowances, for a family of four, include eggs, fruits and vegetables, cans of soup, canned meats, cereal, peanut butter, rice, and beans. Most students couldn't picture their own families managing on the allotments provided.
As each group completed their shopping, the most important "buy," at no cost, was a sense of the reality many families face in feeding their loved ones, and a lesson of compassion for those with tighter budgets. That purchase doesn't come in paper or plastic. Just soul.
HELPING HANDS FOR THE HOMELESS ~~ |
Rachel Goodman '13, Dalya Romaner '14, and Gabby Steinbrecher '12
represented Helping Hands for the Homeless, delivered a check for $22,000 to Jonathan's Place, the monies dedicated to the support of a medical room for the center's clients.
"We started Helping Hands for the Homeless because we wanted to reach out to the people in the Dallas community," said Rachel who co-founded the organization with Gabby. "Yavneh has so many great clubs doing things in Israel and other parts of the world, as well as helping out in the general Jewish community. Homelessness is a larger problem in Dallas than people realize and we wanted to do something more to help the people of our city. With our donation, we are able to allow health to come first, as it should, and this room provides a place for the child to receive necessary medical care in a bright and cheerful environment."
Since 1994, Jonathan's Place has served as an emergency shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children, age newborn to 17 years. It is a temporary home that provides basic needs, including food, clothing and education, and advanced needs, including medical, dental and psychological.
"We are really impressed with the wonderful job the students did on their fundraiser last year and it means a lot for them to have put forth so much effort to support our kids," said Doug Hood, the Director of Development and Communications at Jonathan's Place. "Our dedicated medical room is used not only for doctors and nurses to evaluate kids, but also as a private place where we can do all our necessary examinations and paperwork when the children first arrive into our care. The donation we received will help us to supplement payments for doctors and nurses, help us keep the room stocked with necessary items, help us keep the room in good, working shape and help ensure all bathroom features work properly for each child.
"Making someone's day better, whether by serving them food, playing with them, or giving them the money to help make a better future is one of the greatest feelings in the world and I hope that it inspires other kids to do more to help others," said Rachel. "It's important for us to raise monies like this because the kids we are helping, are not so different from ourselves, and they certainly are deserving of this kind of care. In just one year we've been able to bring a lot of help to the kids of Jonathan's Place and we hope to do more so this year, and in the years to come."
In addition to raising this money, Helping Hands for the Homeless volunteers give their time monthly to the children of Family Gateway, hosting arts and crafts for the underprivileged kids. "These programs give us a chance to help others and, every time we volunteer, it puts a smile on our faces," said Gabby. "I know that I've helped the Dallas community in some way, and made an impact in the world."
Helping Hands for the Homeless will lend support this year, from an April 1 dessert and raffle, to benefit Family Gateway, which provides housing and comprehensive services to homeless families with children, empowering them to move from current crisis back to self-sufficiency. For sponsorship, reservations, or information, please email info@yavnehdallas.org

~~ A standing ovation to Yavneh's Theatre director, Isabella Russell-Ides, as her play CENOTE! was chosen as one of three finalists in New York's MultiStages 2011 New Works Festival. CENOTE! Is the mystical tale of a Mayan slave girl, born at a time when the Mayan civilization is skidding off the map. A time of forests despoiled, vanishing bees, the rich getting richer, and brutal bloody sacrifice. CENOTE! Is a love story that slips between the portals of the past and the present, taking the audience on a timeless and exciting journey. Ms. Russell-Ides, who will direct the March 11 Yavneh production of Secret Garden, is the winner of Echo Theatre's Big Shout Out 2010 (The Early Education of Conrad Eppler), Nora's Playhouse, NYC Outstanding New Play 2009 (Leonard's Car), DFW Critics Forum Best New Play 2008 (Coco & Gigi), and other honors. A bow to you, Ms. Russell-Ides.
