When Strategic Thinking Matters Most

A strategic plan can be thought of as a "form" to be completed while strategic thinking is the actual crafting of the strategic architecture. To ensure that a team remains responsive to important change and proactively creates change that advances the company, leaders must develop a culture that knows when to think strategically.

The need for strategic thinking increases in importance when there is uncertainty about competition, the business environment, or the overall economy. Here are 3 conditions that warrant strategic thinking to move workplace initiatives forward:

  1. Resources are finite or constrained
  2. The commitment of resources is irreversible
  3. Decisions must be coordinated across units and/or over time
