Independent Colleges Elect New Trustees
The South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees elected five new trustees at a meeting on October 5 at Columbia College. The new members include Toby W. Goodlett, Executive Vice President/Retail Banking Executive at First Citizens Bank; Heather Hoopes-Matthews, Marketing Director for Nexsen Pruet; Nancy Spencer, Regional Vice President of Delta Dental South Carolina; Daniel T. Sulton, a partner with Ford & Harrison; and Joseph D. Walker, a shareholder with the McNair Law Firm. Randy Horn, President & CEO of Colonial Life, was re-elected to a second term.

Dr. Betsy Fleming, President of Converse College, was elected to serve as the Board's vice chair and chair of the Council of Presidents. In addition, the Trustees elected President Jimmy Epting of North Greenville University, President Cleveland Sellers of Voorhees College, and President Robert Wyatt of Coker College as at-large members of the Board's executive committee.

Sara Fisher, Executive Vice President and COO of the National Bank of South Carolina, will continue to chair the SCICU Board of Trustees. Henri Etta Baskins, Regional Director of AT&T South Carolina, is the chair-elect, and Mike Brenan, President of BB&T of South Carolina, is the immediate past chair.

Giles, from Rock Hill, SC, received a $2000 scholarship, and Hamilton, from Greenville, SC, received a $1000 scholarship.

The scholarship recipients were selected by the Center for Scholarship Administration from dozens of applications received from students at SCICU member institutions. Click here for additional information on these outstanding students and their awards.

Milliken & Company was recognized for 50 years of continuous support of independent higher education in South Carolina. Business leader and philanthropist Roger Milliken was instrumental in establishing SCICU in 1953 and has donated more than $4.7 million in support of academic excellence, especially in the field of independent student research.

SCICU Distributes More than $700,000

Thanks to the generous donations from the many friends and supporters of independent higher education, SCICU distributed $704,755 to its member colleges and universities during the fiscal year that ended on August 31, 2010. • Scholars/Named Scholarships         $289,015
  • Student Research                            $85,160

  • Excellence in Teaching Awards         $60,000
  • Donor Designated Gifts                  $135,600

Something New: Career Connections 2011

Interview DayFor sixteen years, SCICU and the career services directors at the member colleges and universities worked together to match graduating students with employers. Until the recent economic downturn, SCICU Interview Day was a primary venue for employers who wanted to hire South Carolina's best and brightest graduates. With the tightening job market, few employers were able to participate in Interview Day because of the lack of hiring opportunities.

Adapting to the changing economy, the career services directors transformed the 17th Annual SCICU Interview Day into a Virtual Job Fair. The career services directors recruited employers to submit employment or internship positions to a special SCICU website. Students were encouraged to respond to the employers by posting their

resumés to the website. Neither the employers nor the students were charged for sharing employment information.

In February, 57 employers submitted 93 jobs to the site. In response, over 600 students from 18 SCICU schools uploaded 445 resumés. Many of the students who did not post their resumes either e-mailed their

resumés directly to an employer or used an employer's on-line application system.

The Virtual Job Fair gave students exposure to a greater number of job vacancies from a large variety of employers at little or no cost to either party.  The downside is that the students did not get the immediate opportunity for personal interviews and the career services directors did not get the kind of personal feedback from both students and recruiters that they normally receive during an interview day. With a slightly improving economy, the program is being tweaked again in an effort to get employers and students face-to-face.

For 2011, SCICU Career Connections (formerly known as the annual SCICU Interview Day) will be a statewide career fair and interview event hosted by the 20 colleges and universities that are members of South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. This year's recruiting event is designed to maximize an employer's time and recruiting resources by providing the opportunity to network with and interview college graduates in one day at one location. Employers and students will have an opportunity to exchange information in the morning and schedule in-person interviews in the afternoon.

Recruiters from corporations, organizations, state and federal agencies, non-profits, and school districts desiring to hire well-qualified graduates for entry-level positions, as well as current students for internship opportunities, are being solicited to participate in this event.  Career Connections will be held Monday, February 28, 2011 at The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Jason was recognized in On Wall Street's national list of the top 40 investment advisors under 40 years of age.

We congratulate both Lee and Jason on their well-deserved national recognition.
