The Birkie:
  38 Years of Inspiring Skiers
to Live Fit, Healthy Lives!

In our house, winter is a journey whose destination is the BIRKIE!

My family and I are grateful and frankly humbled by the enormous dedication of all staff and volunteers who work on the Birkie each year. It's an extraordinary event and is as much a part of our family experience as birthdays and holidays.

"Tony Wise asked me to design a good trail system at Telemark. I spent 14 days there and laid out trails similar to the Vasalopet trails in Sweden. Later, Marty Hall added more hills. From the point of view of competitive skiers, it is a very good course."

~ Sven Wiik, Nordic guru, Steamboat Springs, Colorado

"The Birkie has been a factor in my life since the first time I skied the trail in 1976. My philosophy is to do whatever we can do to foster participation in the overall event. I want more people on the snow and enjoying the weekend."

~ Ned Zuelsdorff, Executive Director, Cable, WI

For almost thirty years, it has been a blessing in my life! THANK YOU.

You guys run a world class event. It is the most fun you can have while torturing yourself.

My life is richer because of my experiences at the
American Birkebeiner.
Can't wait for next year!

See you at the start, race you the finish...hoping to have the time of my life along the way!

-Jim Reker

To me the day is close to a religious experience...you are excited but respectful, almost reverent to the course and the challenges of the day.
The people you are skiing with are all comrades on a mission to soak up the day and dig within to see what we all have down deep.

Better than Christmas. I will be skiing the Birkie every year I'm alive on Earth. It's that special."

Praise for 2010 Events!

GREAT RACE! GREAT JOB!

Loved skiing with 8000 of my closest ski friends!!!

Keep up the good work!

My 23rd and it was one of the best! Thanks!

You do a great job. I am always impressed.

Thanks for a great race!

You all did an amazing job in making this race, with record numbers, come off extremely well. The grooming this year has been fantastic, and the trail was excellent all year.
Thank you sooo much!

Great weather, do that every year.

The race was very smooth. I thought the organization was outstanding. Congratulations on another wonderful Birkie!!

THANK YOU to all the wonderful people who make this race possible!!!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the volunteers!

Have only favorable comments to pass on after my 1st Birkie. Staff and volunteers were helpful and courteous. Carhart meets spandex!

Awesome event!

Thanks for running a very classy event.

As always, a great job! Thanks to all the volunteers.

Great race! Great volunteers! Very well organized. Thank you.

My first Birkie, I caught the FEVER!

The groomers did a fabulous job and my hat is off to them!
  Greetings from the Birkie!

NedZuelsdorff
Hi Skiers and Friends!

Only a week to the 2011 Birkie and we will be ready! It is very exciting with an all-time record 8,800 Birkie and Korte skiers. Mother Nature has thrown us a curve ball with the warmer temperatures, but the course is holding up, the colder temperatures have returned and snow is in the forecast. We anticipate a great event for the 11,000 total skiers that will be here for race week.

The record number of skiers means more traffic and possible delays. We will have special buses running from Hayward to Telemark and Start Line Saturday morning. Reduce your pre-race stress, park in Hayward, ride a bus to Telemark and have your car waiting for you when you finish. Riding the bus will help you, us and everyone have an even better event! Please use them. There's more info below. I also encourage you to pick up your race bib Thursday and avoid the Friday afternoon rush.

The greatest cross-country ski event in North American is waiting for you. Get here early and enjoy it. See you soon.

Stay Fit!

Ned Zuelsdorff

Executive Director

Be Prepared - Carry Your Own GU!

This year each skier will receive a packet of GU when picking up their race packet. There will not be any GU at Food Stations on the Race Course so skiers should be prepared to carry their own energy gel.
All Stations have water, HEED Electrolyte Drink and bananas. Oranges are available at select food stations.

We strongly recommend you carry your own energy products during the event. We also recommend that you try the energy drink before the event so that you're familiar with it. More information on Food/Aid Stations is available here.

Race Day Busing

The last thing you want to worry about on Race Day is busing and parking. Check out the Parking/Busing Information for schedules, maps and detailed information, so you can eliminate that concern! Free parking and busing is available to all skiers and spectators.

It is very important that you allow plenty of time to drive, park and then bus to Telemark where you will have a 10 minute walk to the start line. Be sure to check out the Race Day busing opportunities from Hayward. Buses will leave from the Hayward High School from 5:30-6:00 a.m. and Donnellan Field from 6:00-6:30 a.m.

Bib Pick-Up for Other Skiers at the 2011 Birkie-Revised

Transferring bibs is prohibited. We need to be able to quickly and accurately identify any skier needing medical assistance or otherwise needing help. In addition, age class and overall awards can be affected by a Bandit skier skiing in another skier's bib.

Following are the revised procedures:

A person (A) may pick up the race bib for a skier (B) if they can provide us with BOTH an original signed letter (emails are not acceptable) from the skier (B) authorizing the pickup AND a photocopy of the skier's (B) photo ID at bib pick-up on Thursday and Friday before the race.

The authorizing letter and ID photocopy will be retained by the Birkie organization. Without the authorizing letter and ID, the bib will not be provided, but can be picked up by skier (B) on Saturday morning at Telemark Lodge.

On Saturday morning, skiers will only be allowed to pick up their own assigned race bib.

IMPORTANT! Photo ID Required to Pick Up Race Bibs

All skiers will be required to show photo ID. Please have your ID ready!

Don't be a Bandit

If skier A gives the race bib to un-registered skier B to ski the race, skier B will be disqualified from the race, and both skiers will be subject to a penalty of $150 that must be paid before being allowed to register for a future race.

Again, transferring bibs is prohibited because we need to be able to quickly and accurately identify any skier needing medical assistance or otherwise needing help. In addition, age class and overall awards can be affected by a Bandit skier skiing in another skier's bib.

  Birkie Fever

Are you going to do the Birkie?

By Sue Lindstedt

Birkie Fever.Sue LindstedtI always laugh to myself when I am asked this question. Obviously these people don't know me; I always do the Birkie! This will be my 20th Birkie and my 24th year attending festivities. Three children and a complete snow melt kept me from doing the Birkie all 24 years. Two of those years I managed to ski the Korte.

The Birkie is what my family does. I met my future in-laws the second year I did the Birkie when I begged a friend to let me stay at his family cabin...I have since married him and have spent every year since at the "Hayward Cabin". My husband continues to ski every year.

This year is especially unique because... Continue Reading.
