In our house, winter is a journey whose destination is the BIRKIE! My family and I are grateful and frankly humbled by the enormous dedication of all staff and volunteers who work on the Birkie each year. It's an extraordinary event and is as much a part of our family experience as birthdays and holidays. "Tony Wise asked me to design a good trail system at Telemark. I spent 14 days there and laid out trails similar to the Vasalopet trails in Sweden. Later, Marty Hall added more hills. From the point of view of competitive skiers, it is a very good course." ~ Sven Wiik, Nordic guru, Steamboat Springs, Colorado "The Birkie has been a factor in my life since the first time I skied the trail in 1976. My philosophy is to do whatever we can do to foster participation in the overall event. I want more people on the snow and enjoying the weekend." ~ Ned Zuelsdorff, Executive Director, Cable, WI
For almost thirty years, it has been a blessing in my life! THANK YOU.
You guys run a world class event. It is the most fun you can have while torturing yourself.
My life is richer because of my experiences at the American Birkebeiner. Can't wait for next year!
See you at the start, race you the finish...hoping to have the time of my life along the way!
-Jim Reker
To me the day is close to a religious experience...you are excited but respectful, almost reverent to the course and the challenges of the day. The people you are skiing with are all comrades on a mission to soak up the day and dig within to see what we all have down deep.
Better than Christmas. I will be skiing the Birkie every year I'm alive on Earth. It's that special."
Praise for 2010 Events!GREAT RACE! GREAT JOB! Loved skiing with 8000 of my closest ski friends!!! Keep up the good work! My 23rd and it was one of the best! Thanks! You do a great job. I am always impressed. Thanks for a great race! You all did an amazing job in making this race, with record numbers, come off extremely well. I thought the organization was outstanding. Congratulations on another wonderful Birkie!! THANK YOU to all the wonderful people who make this race possible!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the volunteers! Have only favorable comments to pass on after my 1st Birkie. Staff and volunteers were helpful and courteous. Carhart meets spandex! Awesome event! Thanks for running a very classy event. As always, a great job! Thanks to all the volunteers. Great race! Great volunteers! Very well organized. Thank you. My first Birkie, I caught the FEVER! The groomers did a fabulous job and my hat is off to them!

Greetings from the Birkie®!

Hi Skiers and Friends! We just completed a very successful BirkieTour last Saturday. More than 600 skiers did the event, with cold conditions under a bright blue sky. I saw a lot of smiling faces and we've received many very positive comments. Ski conditions are fantastic for both skating and striding. A ribbon of snow has been plowed on Lake Hayward to preserve the course even if we get a warm-up. I'm very happy to report that we've reached an agreement with Telemark Resort allowing us access to the property. This means that the courses for the Birkie, Kortelopet and Haakon 12K races will be the same as last year. More info can be found below. We expect more than 11,000 total skiers here for Birkie week, with the Birkie now just 31 days away. Things are busy here as we and our 50 race chiefs prepare for your race. We will be ready! You'll receive two Carpe Skiem electronic newsletters in February to keep you updated on the Birkie events. You can always check our website for information and updates as well. Stay Fit and see you on the Trails! Ned Zuelsdorff Executive Director [email protected]

Second Annual BirkieTour Attracts Participants Despite the Cold
A frigid morning greeted skiers at the start of the second annual BirkieTour held on Saturday, January 22, 2011. Temperatures were just below zero as skiers started the Tour from County Highway OO in Seeley, Wisconsin.
"Over 640 skiers registered for our second annual BirkieTour,"
said Ned Zuelsdorff, Executive Director of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF). "We were afraid the cold temperatures would keep people away, but that wasn't the case as 50 new people entered the event Friday evening and Saturday morning."
"Many skiers indicated that after having such a great time at last year's event they weren't going to let the cold weather deter them from participating this year," said Zuelsdorff. "Although the course was slow, skiers indicated they had a lot of fun skiing the relaxed, untimed event with their family and friends."
BirkieTour skiers started the event at County Highway OO in Seeley, skied north on...Continue Reading.

A Volunteer's Reward
By Phil Van Valkenberg
For me, the highlight of another great Birkie Week last winter was volunteering Friday morning as the starter for the Junior Birkie. This may be one of the lower profile events, but it is a wonderful race series attended by about 300 kids. It's a level above Barnebirkie and includes kids through high school age. I used to volunteer when I lived up north and have come back to do it since. I missed 2009 due to travel arrangements and regretted not doing so. Got up to Hayward Thursday in 2010 so was able to help.
The Junior Birkie is so special because it is scads of kids having a great time racing on skis. The spectators, mainly family, love it too. We got to the lodge before seven when it was as quiet as Tut's tomb. It was -14 degrees on the bank clock when we rolled through Cable. Then we spent a couple hours setting up the course in the stadium area. The cold was a shock to the system after our reasonable southern Wisconsin winter, but the bright sun warmed things up by race time. There were many age classes, boys and girls races and finally...Continue Reading.

If you have been skiing and following a plan to reach a performance goal and you find it working, stick to it. You can continue to have a considerable workout load for the next two and a half weeks. You can have...Continue Reading.
