The Birkie:
  38 Years of Inspiring Skiers
to Live Fit, Healthy Lives!

In our house, winter is a journey whose destination is the BIRKIE!

My family and I are grateful and frankly humbled by the enormous dedication of all staff and volunteers who work on the Birkie each year. It's an extraordinary event and is as much a part of our family experience as birthdays and holidays.

"Tony Wise asked me to design a good trail system at Telemark. I spent 14 days there and laid out trails similar to the Vasalopet trails in Sweden. Later, Marty Hall added more hills. From the point of view of competitive skiers, it is a very good course."

~ Sven Wiik, Nordic guru, Steamboat Springs, Colorado

"The Birkie has been a factor in my life since the first time I skied the trail in 1976. My philosophy is to do whatever we can do to foster participation in the overall event. I want more people on the snow and enjoying the weekend."

~ Ned Zuelsdorff, Executive Director, Cable, WI

For almost thirty years, it has been a blessing in my life! THANK YOU.

You guys run a world class event. It is the most fun you can have while torturing yourself.

My life is richer because of my experiences at the
American Birkebeiner.
Can't wait for next year!

See you at the start, race you the finish...hoping to have the time of my life along the way!

-Jim Reker

To me the day is close to a religious experience...you are excited but respectful, almost reverent to the course and the challenges of the day.
The people you are skiing with are all comrades on a mission to soak up the day and dig within to see what we all have down deep.

Better than Christmas. I will be skiing the Birkie every year I'm alive on Earth. It's that special."

Praise for 2010 Events!

GREAT RACE! GREAT JOB!

Loved skiing with 8000 of my closest ski friends!!!

My 23rd and it was one of the best! Thanks!

You do a great job. I am always impressed.

Thanks for a great race!

You all did an amazing job in making this race, with record numbers, come off extremely well. The grooming this year has been fantastic, and the trail was excellent all year.
Thank you sooo much!

Great weather, do that every year.

The race was very smooth. I thought the organization was outstanding. Congratulations on another wonderful Birkie!!

THANK YOU to all the wonderful people who make this race possible!!!

As always, a great job! Thanks to all the volunteers.

Great race! Great volunteers! Very well organized. Thank you.

My first Birkie, I caught the FEVER!

  Greetings from the Birkie!

Hi Skiers and Friends!

We've been enjoying fantastic Fall weather in Birkie land. The colored leaves have fallen and cooler temperatures are forecasted. A very successful Birkie Trail Run, Relay & Trek is behind us (you should have been there if you weren't!) and now we focus on the 2011 BirkieTour and Birkie.

There is some trail work remaining, including construction of the new warming and storage building at the Boedecker trail crossing north of "OO". We'll give you a complete trail update in the November ezine.

We'll also inform you of 2011 Birkie event highlights in the upcoming issues of the Carpe Skiem and in the Pre-race issue of the Birch Scroll that will be coming to you in late October, so stay in touch.

Stay fit,

 Ned Zuelsdorff

Birkie Searches for Three Strong Skiers to Re-Enact
54-Kilometer Journey to "Save the Prince"

The Board of Directors for the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) is searching for two cross country skiers to dress as Birkebeiner warriors and a woman skier to represent Inga, the mother of baby Prince Haakon to ski the 54 kilometer journey from Cable to Hayward on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 re-enacting a historic event more than 800 years ago.

The three skiers will dress in authentic gear, ski on wooden skis, and depict the 800-year-old rescue of Prince Haakon (Hō-ken), the baby who became one of the most popular Kings in Norwegian history. Inga will ski either the 54-kilometer Classic Birkie or 23-kilometer Kortelopet before meeting up with the Birkie warriors and baby Prince Haakon at the finish line on Main Street in Hayward.

The Birkebeiner warriors became a Norwegian symbol of courage, perseverance and character in the face of adversity; and the historic rescue inspired the creation of three ski marathons...Continue Reading

Pisten Bully 100 Groomer for Sale

Pisten Bully 100
The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation is selling its 1999 Pisten Bully 100 grooming machine. The machine is in very good to excellent condition. It was new on the trail in the winter of 1999/2000. It is an exceptionally clean machine with an excellent service record. The service record documents will be provided.

It has 2525 hours on the engine drive card and 1830 hours on the tiller motor. All the hydraulic hoses and the tiller bar were replaced during the 2008 season. New rubber drive tracks were installed on the machine in 2006. These tracks make low snow grooming a possibility with this machine. The groomer has a 10' tiller capacity with a 12' combed surface and adjustable twin track setters. The front snow blade has a 12' capacity.

The sale price of this unit is $108,000.00 with $3,000.00 dollars of shop labor service provided toward any necessary repairs or maintenance within the first twelve (12) months after ownership transfer. Additional photos are available here.

Photos, showings, or test drive are available upon request.

Grampa Teaches Birkie Fever

Mark Francik Birkie Fever
Mark Francik
By Mark Francik

At my 13th Korte I was joined by my three grandsons. The oldest Bobby at 17, had skied two previous Kortes with me and was certain he could take me. His two younger brothers Jimmy 15, and Marc 13, wanted to take the challenge. The two newest skiers had only been on skis once before; with some concern I agreed to let them come.

Jimmy and Bobby reported that at the first food stop Marc was ready to....Continue Reading
