Eaglecrest Ski Area

Eaglecrest Ski Area offers stunning views of the Juneau area.

The Winter Fun Season Begins
Outdoor enthusiasts look forward to winter in Juneau

With the coming of Old Man Winter, Juneau residents and winter visitors eagerly pull out the cold weather gear and dust off the skis, snowboards, skates, snowshoes, and hiking boots.

Never ones to shy away from snow and ice (we actually revel in it), folks here simply walk out the door into a winter wonderland setting that others only dream about.  Winter recreation areas are close at hand.

  • Eaglecrest Ski Area is only 12 miles from the heart of downtown
  • Heli-skiing opportunities are just a short flight from the airport
  • Excellent cross-country skiing is as close as the lake at Mendenhall Glacier
  • An enclosed ice skating rink and numerous outdoor ponds offer superb venues

All this, in postcard-worthy settings guaranteed to take your breath away.

Check it all out here.

Exhibits with a Purpose
Juneau's museums keep things fresh

New at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum:  "Drilling & Mining:  Hands-On Mining."

This permanent exhibit is designed as a self-exploration room about Juneau's early mining history and mining practices.  Included in the room are several hands-on exhibits for children and adults to enjoy, including:
  • an interactive stamp mill
  • a model of the Treadwell Mine with sliding panels depicting the infamous cave-in in 1917
  • a weights and measures station with activity sheets
  • a mineral ID station
  • miners' hats and ID tags
  •

New at the Alaska State Museum:  "A History of the Pribilof Islands 1890-1925," as seen through photographs from the U.S. National Archives.  This temporary exhibit runs through January 15.

Also running through January 15: "Ghosts in the Graveyard -- Jackie Manning Solo Exhibition."

"Two Figures" by Jackie Manning. Courtesy of the Alaska State Museum.

These mixed-media paintings by Juneau artist Jackie Manning inter-twine the figure and nature so that the form of one is lost in the connection with the other.

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum and the Alaska State Museum are local treasures -- guardians of our past performance, present endeavors, and future imaginings.  Plan to make them part of your itinerary on your next trip to Juneau.
