Eat To Get Leaner With Age!
As we age, our calorie ratios need to change if we want to stay lean or get leaner. Here is the magic formula: for every year past the age of 35, you should increase your daily protein intake by 2 grams, and decrease your "fast carbs" intake by 3 grams.

Assuming your daily protein needs were 100 grams at age 35, this means that at 55 you should be eating at least 140 grams per day, and you should have reduced your intake of "fast carbs" by about 50 grams per day. Of course, if you make it to 130 years old, this formula might not work as well, but you get the picture.

"Fast carbs" are foods like flour and starch. Slow carbs and fiber really don't need to be limited, and many slow carbs can even be "negative fat foods" - meaning the more you eat, the leaner you get! Dark green veggies are a prime example of such foods, so eat them to your heart's content! As always, sugar and high fructose corn syrup should be cut out of anyone's diet completely.

Good Fish, Bad Fish, Clean Fish, Toxic Fish!

There are good fish and bad fish, and it's often hard to sort it all out. It is vital to eat as clean as possible, and fish vary drastically based on which waters they come from, and how naturally they are raised. Here is a website that does a lot of the sorting and classifying for you: http://www.seafoodwatch.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/sfw_health.aspx

Train Your Brain by Focusing on Your 15 Favs!
Remember when I suggested that you think of your 15 favorite "good for you" foods? Focusing on them will create new cravings, and atrophy the nerve pathways for the "bad" foods. It's a workout for your brain that does a great job of reprogramming it. My 15 favs will be posted on Leisa's blog soon (http://fifteenfavefoods.wordpress.com/) so check back there often. Have you thought of yours yet? If not, do it today!

Your brain training suggestion for this newsletter is to watch the following video to arm your brain with some very necessary information (see link in the next paragraph). Josh, an Alki member, found the video, recognized the message as the same one he had been hearing from us (i.e. newsletter #14), and told me about it.

This video is the best lecture I have seen on sugar and how it is metabolized, so be prepared to have your eyes opened! If you want to change your life, and if you really care about the ones you love, you will invest the 1.5 hours it takes to watch it. Just click this link or paste it into your browser: http://bit.ly/8G4A0

If you want to keep living in denial, die early, and see the ones you love suffer from obesity and disease, then skip it. How's that for a guilt trip?

Green Tea Health Benefits Magnified by Adding Lemon Juice
I know I talk a lot about green tea, but that's only because it's so good for you! It benefits your brain, your body, your metabolism, your health, and even bumps up your fat burning ability. Some don't like it much, but a little lemon and/or some Stevia or Truvia can make it quite tasty.

Calcium and Vitamin D Help You Burn Fat
I often talk of the health benefits and immune boost of vitamin D, but did you know that it can help you burn fat too, when paired with calcium? Part of the reason is that getting proper calcium prevents calcium deficiency, which is the main reason people crave ice cream and other sugary dairy treats. The other part is that vitamin D helps you absorb the calcium, so they work well together to have a great effect on your fat burning ability.
