Celebrate National Public Lands Day in Mesa Verde

Park entrance fees will be waived all day on Saturday, September 26, 2009 for National Public Lands Day (NPLD). User fees, such as for ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours, remain in effect.

National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy.

In 2008, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, and planted over 1.6 million trees.

While no specific Mesa Verde National Park volunteer projects have been scheduled for this year's NPLD, this special day is an excellent opportunity to pack up your car or your daypack and spend some time reconnecting with the extraordinary cultural and natural resources that Mesa Verde has to offer.

Visit one of your national parks for the 16th annual National Public Lands Day!

The National Parks: America's Best Idea, the latest documentary collaboration between award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns and writer Dayton Duncan will premiere on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) on Sunday, September 27, 2009. The twelve-hour series will be broadcast two hours at a time over six consecutive nights.

Mesa Verde National Park, in partnership with the Mesa Verde Museum Association and ARAMARK, will show a one-hour sneak preview of the series at a special free program on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Morefield Campground Amphitheater.

Join us for ARAMARK's complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, and prepare to be swept up in a compelling retrospective of the special places that we hold most dear. Park entrance fees will be waived after 5:00 p.m., so come early, bring a picnic dinner and enjoy twilight at Morefield!

The National Parks: America's Best Idea is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. As such, it follows in the tradition of Burns' exploration of other American inventions, such as baseball and jazz.

The narrative traces the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800s and follows its evolution for nearly 150 years. Using archival photographs, first-person accounts of historical characters, personal memories and analysis from more than 40 interviews, and what Burns believes is the most stunning cinematography in Florentine Films' history, the series chronicles the steady addition of new parks through the stories of the people who helped create them and save them from destruction. It is simultaneously a biography of compelling characters and a biography of the American landscape. Learn more at http://www.pbs.org/nationalparks/about/

We hope to see you, your family and friends to this special free preview! MVMA will be on hand to sell copies of the stunning hardcover companion book for the series, the stirring soundtrack CD, and to accept preorders for the complete DVD box set that features "making of" footage, interviews, and many extras, which will be released in early October.
