Greetings!

Thanks to everyone who helped make our annual fundraiser, LA Street Scenes 3: Everyone Has A Story, a huge success. Not only did we raise essential funds to maintain and expand our programs, but everyone had a great time and was impressed with the powerful show directed by Diane Namm and performed by a talented cast and crew.

A very special thanks goes out to our great host, Contemporary Jazz saxophonist Michael Lington. One of our youth participants, Calviann, was also in attendance and was thrilled to see her story come to life on the stage.

We're excited to announce that Def Leppard has made it to the final round in the CMT Music Awards. Your vote for them could earn Create Now money. See the details below.

This month we're featuring a writing program that serves at-risk and homeless children in Santa Monica. With the state of the economy, homelessness is rising in record numbers and the children who are effected are in need of creative outlets like Create Now programs to express their anxiety in a positive manner.

Thank you for your support of Create Now. While we know that times are tough, every penny counts to enable us to bring our unique arts programs to the kids in our community that need the most support. It's been proven that art is therapeutic, and the children that we serve urgently need healing. If you would like to contribute cash or in-kind donations, please contact us at (213) 484-8500 or giving@createnow.org.

Sincerely,

Jill Gurr

"A Life of Pain"

TV writer Arika Mittman wanted to give back to her community of Santa Monica. Through our Write Now program, Arika presented a Screenwriting Workshop to 15 at-risk and shelter-housed homeless children, ages 6 to 17, in collaboration with Children's Lifesaving Foundation. During eight sessions, these kids worked as a team with their mentor to create a professional, well-written script.

Arika said, "The kids came up with the title, 'A Life of Pain,' the premise, main characters, and story." For the last workshop, everyone took turns reading the final screenplay, which helped build literacy skills.

"We all felt we added to the story. I had tons of fun," said Daisy, age 15. And Yael, 7 years old, said, "I never had a class like this! It was neat. She made us feel so grown-up. I listened a lot."
