Dream Paint Flourish!

Greetings!
I am really excited by how things are coming together these past couple weeks. Though I know it seems impossible that I am working on so many seemingly unrelated things all at once ~ I hope you will see how all of these have enabled each other to blossom quite profusely! One is a new canvas of the golf course ~ an ethereal sunrise with stunning colors. Another is my abstract dream landscape (right), which leapt from a pastel (25 years ago) to an oil and then to a watercolor wallpaper mural yesterday! Then a friend invited me to paint with her at Haven Beach at the crack of dawn which instigated a beautiful elongated painting (below) and dream cues to interpret it's meaning.. I have opened a new exhibit of my Conservation Series (below) at Wedmore Place in Williamsburg and my plein air paintings of Mathews are still on view at The White Dog Inn in Mathews. Stop in and have lunch or dinner and enjoy the paintings! I ate at both places last week and they were fabulous! I had the shrimp and my friend had the crab ~ to die for! I have spruced up the website so you can now order my books, cards and art online. And am planning a Demonstration Saturday at the Studio on September 12. I am doing three demonstrations; Oil Painting: Building Layered Color (10 - 11 am), Wallpaper Murals (noon - 1 pm) and Wet Ink Transfers for Marble Tiles (2 - 3 pm.) I hope you will mark you calendar and plan to come! Demonstration Saturday is free, so I hope you will come enjoy the day and bring a friend. Hours are 9 am until 5 pm.
Enjoy!

Part 3 PAINTING DEMONSTRATION
Morphing Images
pastel.... to oil ... to watercolor ...
Hand Painted Wallpaper Murals!
Following an old dream lead me to a new one, one I didn't realize I had until it just about jumped up and bit me! I just finished this oil painting. I was inspired by a pastel from many years ago (See article Painting from Memory: Step by Step) which I found while looking for something else, or so I thought!
While working on the oil, I kept having visions, thoughts and encounters with wallpaper! I know this sounds odd, but I kept seeing images printed as wallpaper ... murals with hand painted color washed on the surface.
I tried to ignore these ideas. I thought them odd and not worth my time to pursue. However, the longer I ignored them, the more persistent they became ~ until the point I would call them encounters!
What I mean by encounters, to give you a specific example ... while I was demonstrating with this painting | |

Two interpretations of Haven Beach A shift in balance . . . cues from a dream
I wasn't planning to paint this weekend. I
certainly wasn't planning to give a painting demonstration. I wasn't
planning to use this elongated canvas for a plein air painting either.
But that is exactly what I did this past Saturday morning at 6:30! Above: Haven, oil, 12 x 48, $1200.A
friend invited me to go paint with her and we ended up out at Haven
Beach as the sun came up. As I was putting my gear in the van,
this 12 x 48 canvas was starting at me, Take me, take me! he
pleaded. I couldn't tell him I had groomed him for something other than
a morning at the beach, so I put him under my arm and off we went.
I had painted the view looking south back in March, Waiting for Spring, left, oil,15 x 30 $1200.) I like the way the dock cantilevers out over the bay
~ with the two chairs at the end. Counterbalanced by the scrubby reeds
and bushes, the whole composition works quite well. The
colors are a delicate balance of muted lavenders and pale yellows,
which reach gently over into the blues and greens.
Six
months later, this week's painting is quite the opposite. While the first painting (facing south) has a fence like barrier of marsh grasses and scrubby trees keeping the viewer at a distance ~ the second painting (facing north)
opens the gate and lets the viewer in. The central section leads your
eye right along the edge of the water, back and forth through the marsh
and sand ~ wading beyond the scrubby trees to the glint of light on the
far shore.
I
can't tell you in all honesty that I saw this at 6:30 Saturday morning
... rather I naturally gravitated to this view without knowing why. I set
up my canvas on the beach and used a little mineral spirits to thin
some permanent green and sketch out the composition directly on my
canvas. Continue reading>
These paintings are currently on view at my Studio Gallery in Hallieford, Virginia. If you would like to come see them, call for directions and to make sure of when I will be in! 804-8725-1183
