Greetings!
I invite you to join me for a Painting Demonstration tomorrow ... Satuday July 11th. I will be demonstrating Painting from Memory at The Gallery on Merchant Square in Williamsburg, VA from 10 am til 2 pm. The article about this demonstration is to the right. A new painting in my Conservation Collection is featured in the Daily Painting Journal below.
The story dovetails with the Memory Painting story! I hope you will enjoy them both! My shows at Wedmore Place in Williamsburg and The White Dog Inn in Mathews County are open! Go have dinner, enjoy the paintings! In conjunction with my exhibits at the inns, I will be giving several Dinner with the Muse talks. If you are interested in having one for your group, small or large, please call me at the studio 804-725-1183 or on my cell 804-366-0990.

Painting from Memory
Three Steps to Start PAINTING LESSON Painting from memories can help us
see and appreciate ourselves more clearly. Follow my painting, in a
series of articles and demonstrations, I share my process of discovery.
Every person has snippets of memories which appear and
disappear like dreams evaporating at daybreak. Those fleeting thoughts
and feelings can take us deep inside ourselves and reconnect us with
the essence of what gives us true joy.
The first step in discovering inspiration is finding something unexpected.
The other day I was looking through my archives. I came across this
pastel from 1978 and was surprised to find myself wanting to draw back
into it! Curious as to why I would be 'drawn' to do such a thing, I
brought the pastel downstairs to the studio to have a closer look.
The second step determines that the inspiration has merit ~ is
that it captures your attention and has you wondering about it, more
than a passing thought. The image reminded me of someplace my parents took me as a child. I remember going to a place called Make Believe Land.
I must have been about five. I remember being intrigued by the woods
behind the Wicked Witch's house. I don't remember where this painting
came from ~ only that it feels just like being there again.
The third step honors The Source and moves forward with The Gift.
Rather than drawing back into the pastel, I put a large canvas on the
easel beside it. "Best to honor that place and time and move forward to
the next place," I thought to myself as I positioned it on my biggest
easel.

Right in My Own Back Yard Featured at The White Dog Inn
Inspired by a year of plein air painting in my Mathews, Virginia home; my new collection, Right in My Own Back Yard, is currently on view at The White Dog Inn in Mathews.
Each
painting portrays a different location in Mathews, painted at a
particular time of day and day of the year. The Collection includes
views of Bethel Beach, Chapel Creek, Haven Beach, Misty Cove, New
Point, Put In Creek and more. See more paintings from the show.
Pictured: Sunday Afternoon, New Point, $1800.
The main dining room is open for dinner. The menu spans from meatloaf to crab norfolk, so there's something for everyone's taste and pocketbook. They have a wonderfully festive deck with spunky blue umbrella tables. I wish I could say I am going to dinner there this weekend, but alas I will have to wait until next week as I am visiting family out of town. You can be sure I will be first in line next week. I hope to see you there!
The White Dog Inn is open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday. Reservations are accepted. 804-725-7680 68 Church Street, Mathews, Virginia
The Coffee Bistro at The White Dog is open Monday through Friday from 7 to 11. |
Routine Structure Stimulates Inspiration Painting from Photographs? 7 Pointers to Getting the Most THE CONSERVATION COLLECTION
Whether to use or not use photographs in painting is a hotly
debated issue. I could argue either side. Rather, I offer what works
and what you can do to get the most of them.
1~ FRAMING THE VIEW Each time I put my eye
to the viewfinder, I am essentially saying to the Muse, "How about
this?" Very quickly then, one can frame up numerous paintings without
lifting a brush. Yesterday I walked and photographed the
landscape at The Williamsburg Winery. Though I have painted there many
times, yesterday I saw the landscape there through new eyes.
2~
The routine structure of doing the same thing by rote, repeatedly is
EXACTLY the kind of task which stimulates the flow. We quickly
disengage from the routine task and connect to a deeper Source.
I began in the vinyard and worked my way around the buildings, finally
ending up on the far side of Wedmore Place and the pond. I
photographed the buildings and their juxtoposition with the landscape.
It didn't take long for me to feel as though I was walking through a. Read More.>
