Yoga for the New Millennium Newsletter January 2011
Greetings!

I am very happy to share the practice of yoga with you. The purpose for the newsletter is to share more information with you about using yoga for overall renewal of the body and mind. I hope that you find the information in the newsletter interesting.

The featured article (free download) this month helps describe the benefits of yoga,"Top 10 Reasons to Try Yoga". This is a must read article for those interested in starting a new yoga practice or anyone who would like to learn more about the benefits of a sustained yoga practice. In the other monthy article "Perspectives on Yoga", I reflect on the early years of my transformation to change my diet towards healthier foods.

I am trying to strike a balance between sharing and informing. I share my yoga journey with you, via "Perspectives on Yoga",  and inform through interesting articles that are published by nationally recognized experts. I also keep in touch with you about the local yoga program that I teach in Seattle. This month is full of great yoga workshops, classes and events. I hope you will join me and the other instructors for our very effective and informative programs that are designed to help you with your wellness program. This month the two featured workshops are Yoga/Pilates and Yoga/EFT. See January Yoga Events and Yoga Classes on the sidebar to the right of this article for more information about the workshops and classes.

Thank you, to the fans of this newsletter, the yoga students who have attend the classes and many others in the community who have helped me promote yoga. Everyone benefits from staying active at all ages.  It is my wish that you find a place for yoga in your existing fitness program. Or that you learn to use yoga as the anchor for kickstarting your stretching and flexibility program if you are starting a new one.

I hope you will share your thoughts with me about anything I can do to make the newsletter more interesting for you. Finally, may you enjoy peace, happiness and the best of health throughout 2011.

Namaste,
D

What is yoga?

Yoga is the process of learning about you.

It was hard to get rid of the old concepts of how I saw myself in relation to the world. The society has held out few positive images from which a young African American girl could grow and learn about herself. I had to keep digging deeper below the labels and stereotypes to find out who I really am. This was not easy as at every turn there were the typical roadblocks from those closest to me whose opinions I valued the most (some were teachers, some were family, some were community leaders). This was the first test on my journey towards the real self and probably the most difficult.

As I grew into a young women I received news, that I was pregnant with my daughter, this turned my world upside down for a short time. It was at once a beautiful, exciting and scary time in my life. I wanted to ensure that my baby would have a flying chance of being the healthiest baby every to enter this world. I knew that it was in part up to me to take the necessary steps to take care of myself throughout my pregnancy.

I began to explore all aspects of my health including the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. I thought the easiest thing to do would be to stop smoking. I did not consider myself a heavy smoker, but I wanted to stop, so I made up my mind to do so, and stopped. Almost everyone that I knew at the time smoked. It was hard. I asked people to go outside the house to smoke and tried to stay out of places that were smoke filled and made a point to sit in the non-smoking sections of the restaurants if there was one. Next, I figured I could change my diet and reduced my intake of pork and some fried foods (like hamburgers). This was more difficult, as it seemed this change caused some raised eyebrows inside my inner circle of family and friends. They thought I was becoming a bit too discriminating about my food choices and let me know on every occasion that we gathered to share a meal. However, I was determined to avoid food that I learned was not good for the baby and me.

It has been a long road and the changes towards better food choices happened gradually. I replaced some of the unhealthy foods like candy bars and soda with fresh juices and fruits. I stopped eating as much processed food as possible. I continued exploring healthier options for my diet for many years until I became vegetarian. Today, I am comfortable with my diet and feel like I am realizing the benefits of my healthy diet as I deepen my yoga practice.

It's now obvious to many people that a natural diet is good not only for a mother with child but for all people. As in my expererience it is possible to start whereever you are towards your goal to make the small changes towards better food choices.

I hope that you enjoy the very best that life has to offer and that in return you will share your gifts with the world.

Namaste,
D
