Dear Friends and Yoga Students

Do you encounter much stress in your life? Most everyone will have some stress. But with the rapid pace of our everyday lives most adults would say they experience increased stress as a result of the day to day demands from our work, caring for family, school and extra curricular activities.

I am very happy to share the practice of yoga with you. The purpose for the newsletter is to share more information with you about  using yoga to reduce the effects of stress and for overall renewal of the body and mind. The featured article this month helps draw our attention towards the benefits of yoga to help with stress management.

This month I reposted the article"10 Reasons to Try Yoga", in the event you would like to forward this newletter to friends and family.
In the featured article "Perspectives on Yoga", I reflect on a stressful time in my life and how yoga helped me to prepare the body for relaxation, meditation and sleeping more peacefully.

I hope that you find the information in the newsletter interesting. I am trying to strike a balance between sharing and informing. I share my yoga journey with you, via "Perspectives on Yoga",  and inform through interesting articles that are published by nationally recognized experts. I also keep in touch with you about the local yoga program that I teach in Seattle.

Thank you, to everyone who has become a fan of the newsletter, the yoga students who have attended the beginner yoga class and others in the community who have helped me promote yoga as a health and wellness program. I am thankful to the owners and patrons of Life Enrichment Bookstore (http://www.lebseattle.com) located in Columbia City. During the summer of 2009 we delivered free yoga classes on site at the bookstore. Thanks also, to Tony Hardy, who teaches Zumba at the Boys and Girls Club in the Ranier Valley. After her class Tony would give a "shout out" for my yoga classes. And a special, thanks to Jeff Chon, founder of the Jun Hong Kung Fu and Sports Association (http://bestseattlekungfu.com) , who enabled me to launch the beginner yoga class at the martial arts center located on Beacon Hill.

As you can see I believe in taking good care of our health through a variety of fitness programs. Everyone benefits from staying active at all ages.  It is my wish that you find a place for yoga in your existing fitness program if you have one. Or that you might use yoga as the anchor for kickstarting your wellness program if you are starting a new one.

I hope you will share your thoughts with me about anything I can do to make the newsletter more interesting for you.

Namaste,
D
Perspectives on Yoga: A book excerpt

What is yoga?

Yoga is the process of learning about you.

At one point in my life...

I lived in Silicon Valley California (Santa Clara/San Jose), at a time of phenomenal technology and economic growth, it was called the "dot-com era". I could sense that so many people were living a very materialistic life and seeking thrills that it seemed only money could satisfy. For a short time I had the same attitude and enjoyed the euphoria of living inside the "dot-com bubble".

The dot-com bubble did not last very long. It eventually burst (in early 2000). The economic downturn in the technology industry affected many businesses and the overall economy of the country at that time. It caused many people to loose jobs. The economic turnaround came slowly and many companies supplemented this by sending jobs out of the country. This was a difficult time. After the bubble burst it was time for tightening my belt. It was hard, and I made many sacrifices like most people. In addition, I began a dedicated course of study towards a master's degree.  In fact, I was working full time, attending master level classes, and continuing to particiapte in several community service projects. Sometimes the workload between the different projects caused a lot of stress.

I tried to maintain my visits to the gym (at work). But suddenly I was working from home more frequently and going into the office to work out at the gym was not as convenient as it had been previously. I walked a lot in the local park and worked out at home as much as possible. In addition, I meditated everyday. I still gained weight and had trouble sleeping. Over several months I developed a routine through a combination of meditation, physical workouts including walking, dancing and biking that helped my body remain strong and healthy. However, after a while these types of physical excercises  became more of a backup to my yoga practice. I became stronger mentally and physically using the techniques I learned in my yoga classes.

Eventually, my sleep became more regulated and the stress began to melt away. Although during this time the workload remained about the same. I think the combination of regular meditation and yoga helped with managing the demands of daily life.

Be the change

"There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories.. --Ursula K. LeGuin

The world is full of wonderful and inspiring stories, some unfolding in distant places and others right next door. KarmaTube is dedicated to bringing more of these stories to light, using the power of video and the internet to demonstrate and multiply acts of compassion, generosity and selflessness.

Our vision is to create and connect a globalnetwork of volunteers awake to capturing these stories, using simple digital video cameras. While the stories produced may be polished and professional or diamonds-in-the-rough, the crucial through-line is this: they celebrate the work of local change agents, demonstrating the ways "do something" moments can be "tipping point" experiences for individuals and communities. To complete the circle, KarmaTube offers three simple suggestions for ways to support the action and spirit shown in each video.

KarmaTube is an evolving project of CharityFocus (and like CharityFocus, is all-volunteer run). We hope something here moves you to, as Gandhi advised,

"be the change you wish to see in the world." (listen to the song by MC Yogi)
