Dear Friends and Yoga Students,

The end of another year is drawing to a close. We will reflect on 2010 and resolve to enter the next year with a new determination to live our best life. There are usually festivities and other celebrations that occur during this time of the year. Many families will draw close and share the seasons traditions in their own way. I hope that everyone will enjoy all that this time of the year offers including the opportunity to reflect, regenerate and renew. Sometimes just sitting quiet can bring a state of peace to the mind and body.

The time of quiet introspective moments are sometimes called meditation, which is a learned practice. It is sometimes practiced in conjunction with other traditions such as yoga. Although this is not mandatory it is sometimes an added component during some yoga sessions. In other classes you may be taught to practice yoga asana (postures) as a form of  "moving meditation". 

I am very happy to share the practice of yoga with you. The purpose for the newsletter is to share more information with you about  using yoga for overall renewal of the body and mind. The featured article this month helps describe the benefits of yoga and meditation. 

This month you can still share the article"10 Reasons to Try Yoga", with your  friends and family. In the featured article "Perspectives on Yoga", I reflect on the early years of my yoga practice and the reason I chose to become a yoga teacher. 

I hope that you find the information in the newsletter interesting. I am trying to strike a balance between sharing and informing. I share my yoga journey with you, via "Perspectives on Yoga",  and inform through interesting articles that are published by nationally recognized experts. I also keep in touch with you about the local yoga program that I teach in Seattle.

Thank you, to the fans of this newsletter, the yoga students who have attended the classes during the year and others in the community who have helped me promote yoga as a health and wellness program. Everyone benefits from staying active at all ages.  It is my wish that you find a place for yoga in your existing fitness program. Or that you learn to use yoga as the anchor for kickstarting your wellness program if you are starting a new one.

I hope you will share your thoughts with me about anything I can do to make the newsletter more interesting for you. Finally, may you enjoy peace, happiness and the best of health for the remainder of this this year and throughout 2011.

What is yoga?

Yoga is the process of learning about you.  

 

Why I become a yoga instructor...

 

"This is just a short note to thank you (and the other great instructors) for all of your encouragement during the years of my Yoga practice in Santa Clara/San Jose. I have learned a lot. Most importantly I have healed a lot. When I started my practice my health was not the best I was full of stress and this was affecting all of the systems of the body. However, in my search for alternative healing practices I began my yoga practice. The original imbalanced health conditions have subsided and this is evidence to me of the healing that takes place if the body, mind and spirit are allowed to unite as one. This is the best thing that could have happened for me and the benefits will continue as I continue to advance my yoga practice. Namaste"

 

I wrote this short note to the owner of the yoga studio which I began practice over ten years ago. At the time (I wrote the thank you note shown above) I had been practicing  yoga for two years. When I started my yoga practice I wanted to add it to my existing fitness routine. My first visit to the yoga studio was with apprehension and anticipation. At the time I felt that I had come to a crossroads in my life. I regularly worked out at the gym and in general I was in excellent health. However, there were some findings which caused some concern. I sought alternative treatments in Ayurveda and other non-intrusive healing practices. I already maintained a long term meditative practice. So, I continued to meditate for insight and to make the best decisions about the next steps in my healing process. I am happy that I attended my first yoga class.

 

Over the years I have seen the improvements that I needed. I credit my regular yoga practice, meditation and a healthy diet for allowing me to heal.

 

I think there are many other people who have different challenges in life similar to mine. But yoga goes beyond just the physical body. It teaches one how to manage in life on a daily basis. I am convinced that yoga has something for everyone.

 

As a yoga instructor I wish to impart my sincere appreciation for the knowledge of yoga to my students by delivering heartfelt and accurate knowledge. I want the classes I teach to help students use yoga as a gateway into the discovery of the inner self. I believe I can deliver the best yoga experience to my students by listening to their needs, creating a relaxed environment for practice, maintaining my own practice and continuing to learn and grow. 

 

Finally, I am teaching and practicing yoga for the lifelong gift of learning and exploring the possibilities for creating meaningful experiences "on and off the mat" that help others grow confidently in their yoga practice.

The world is full of wonderful and inspiring stories, some unfolding in distant places and others right next door. KarmaTube is dedicated to bringing more of these stories to light, using the power of video and the internet to demonstrate and multiply acts of compassion, generosity and selflessness. 

Our vision is to create and connect a globalnetwork of volunteers awake to capturing these stories, using simple digital video cameras. While the stories produced may be polished and professional or diamonds-in-the-rough, the crucial through-line is this: they celebrate the work of local change agents, demonstrating the ways "do something" moments can be "tipping point" experiences for individuals and communities. To complete the circle, KarmaTube offers three simple suggestions for ways to support the action and spirit shown in each video.

KarmaTube is an evolving project of CharityFocus (and like CharityFocus, is all-volunteer run). We hope something here moves you to, as Gandhi advised,
