Worm of the Month
In this
section, we'll feature an equine parasite each month, with
information on the parasite's life cycle and the health consequences for horses. This month:
Summer sores
Prevention
is the key to reducing your horse's risk of developing summer sores, and now is
the time to begin preparations for the warmer, and fly-filled, months ahead.

Greetings!
Welcome to our May issue of Worm Control News, from Horsemen's Laboratory.
It seems
Spring might finally be settling in, and with it many of the good times that
come with horse ownership. For your reading this month we've got guest expert
and longtime H-Lab customer Mary Midkiff, talking about her mind/body/spirit
approach to horses and riders. We've also got a good article on summer sores and what you can do to prevent them from happening. Here's
something interesting...a recent survey by American Horse Publications of over
11,000 horse owners and managers showed that while 99% of owners deworm their
horses, fewer than 16% involve their veterinarians in parasite control. Some
additional details are here at TheHorse.com, including comments from one of the
country's top parasitologists on why that's no longer a good idea. If you're
heading out with your horse in a trailer to enjoy an early summer show or a
warm-weather trail ride, be sure to do a thorough safety check, and drive
carefully. As always, if there's anything we can do to help in your equine worm
control program, please call or email us at hlab@horsemenslab.com. We hope you enjoy reading this issue!
Sincerely,
John W. Byrd, DVM

Misconceptions
exist about how to use fecal egg count (FEC) testing. At Horsemen's Laboratory,
helping horse owners understand the most effective way to use FECs is part of
our mission; as such, we're constantly on the lookout for new information and
research we can share with our customers.
This month, our guest
expert is Mary Midkiff, an internationally known author, clinician, trainer and
instructor, and the creator of the Women & Horses fitness and performance
program as well as a long-time H-Lab customer. Mary specializes in a holistic
approach to conditioning and training horses, one that promotes a deep bonding

Correction From April Issue
Last month we reported on
the equine parasite resistance article and Horsemen's Lab giveaway at the Web
site SoulfulEquine.com. The link that was included connected not to the
article, but to the comment about the article from Worm Control News writer/producer Lisa Kemp of
KempEquine.
Here's the link directly to Stephanie Krahl's excellent article,
Parasite Resistance in Horses and Chemical Deworming. Our apologies to
Stephanie for the technical glitch!
