H-LAB PROFILE In this

This Month: Becky Byrd
The office manager at Horsemen's Laboratory is a vivacious and
friendly dynamo by the name of Mrs. Becky Byrd. Yes, she's 'that' Byrd, Dr.
John Byrd's college sweetheart and beloved wife of 44 years.
Mother of two sons, Becky's also 'grandma' to nine youngsters. "Our
oldest son has four children and our youngest has two, so we have six official
grandkids, but we also claim three others," she laughs.
Becky was
a working mother early on, trying to balance being involved with Dr. John's
equine practice as well as raising the boys. They made it work by working
together.
"When we
started the first clinic, our eldest was two and our youngest only six months,
so they just went with me. They played, slept, and ate while we had office
calls, and if John had a horse call and needed my help they went with us,"
she says. "It was a little hard at first but we all got used to it and it
worked well. I loved both jobs and was thankful the boys could be with us and
that I could work with my husband."

Growing
up around horses is something Becky could relate to, since she did it herself.
"Mom, Dad, and I went on trail rides every weekend in the summer, from eighth
grade 'til I went to college. It was so much fun. We each had our own
horse, and we camped out under the stars and cooked on an open fire, from
Friday night until Sunday," she recalls.
While the
Byrds are now headquartered in Mahomet, Illinois, you might remember from the
October issue of Worm Control News that the pair has relocated several times
over the years, supporting Dr. John's veterinary education and career. Becky
says doing so has also helped her grow as a person. "Over the years, we've
lived in many different different states, and met lots of great people. I think
it's helped me be able to start a conversation with anyone, and make new
friends easily," she says.

If you call the office number, you're most likely
to speak with Becky, and interacting with H-Lab customers is a role she
relishes. "Since we've started the lab I've gotten to talk to people all over
the U.S. and Canada, working together with my husband in helping them with
their equine worm programs," says Becky. So next time you call H-Lab with a
question, be sure to say 'hi, Becky!'
