KIDZSTOCK & YOUNG PERFORMERS ON KWMR COMMUNITY RADIO TUNE IN SAT. JUNE 12th 10 AM & THURS. JUNE 17th 5 PM KWMR 90.5 FM PT REYES or 89.9 FM BOLINAS or ONLINE LIVE STREAM
Tune in on June 12th, 10 AM - 10:30 AM with KWMR Radio Host Marc Matheson on "The Place We LIve" for his interview with Peggy Tunder on KIDZSTOCK and the debut of the outdoor amphitheater "Theater for Tolerance." Peggy is Cascade Canyon School's co-founder and the visionary for the new community amphitheater. Peggy Tunder, Visionary for the "Theater for Tolerance" | Joining Peggy in the interview is KIDZSTOCK young musical performer, Noah Mohan.
Noah, 10 years old, is a 4th grader at Cascade Canyon School. He fell in love with the idea of a band when he saw older kids perform Smoke in the Water at a school talent show. Three years later he has been on stage many times with his 5-member band called the Afterclass. Noah loves to perform and has been in several plays including an ensemble part with the Fairfax Players. Afterclass is coached by musician Todd Boston.
On June 17th at 5 PM to 5:30 PM on KWMR, Marc will interview the KIDZSTOCK auditon and performer coordinator, Linda Eisel. She'll discuss how KIDZSTOCK was born. Joining her will be four youth performers, Michael Weinstein, age 17, Julie Jizrawi, age 17, Matt Jaffe, age 15, and Teddy Breck, age 12.
Michael Weinstein of
Greenbrae, 17, a junior at Redwood High, grew up listening to Peter, Paul
and Mary and Simon and Garfunkle in his home. This was not his music choice but
his father's. Michael first was a writer, verse by verse, emotion by emotion, before he could play a chord. He started guitar in 7th grade,
took lessons and played rock. Soon, he was creating music for his writing.
"Making something out of nothing - for me, creating songs crystallizes an idea
or philosophy or emotion." Michael's symbiotic rhythm between his 60's
acoustic Martin D-35 and poetic folk jazz lyrics transport the listener to his
space, words and meaning. Michael has performed at school. Now he will be the
warm up performer for music celebrity Joan Baez, one of his muses. "I have seen
the video of her and Bob Dylan in Washington D.C. It will be so amazing to see
and hopefully meet her."
Julie Jizrawi's vocal
coach, Pollyanna Bush, unhesitatingly describes Julie as a singer of "power,
grace and beauty." Julie, 17, of Petaluma changed her world. Initially a classical opera
singer, she made the bold move into the unchartered areas of popular-style
singing. Moving to chest singing, microphone use and stage presence, Julie
persevered. Along the way, Julie began songwriting and dancing. When there is a
course change, Julie tackles the challenges and finds opportunities in each new
song and step. Julie will be joined at KIDZSTOCK by the accomplished pianist and composer, Joshua Witt, age 13.
Matt Jaffe of Mill Valley, age 15, says the hardest thing about composing music is the endless possibility. As a songwriters, sometimes he feels powerless to get it all on paper. Matt began studying classical violin at age 5. In sixth grade he started
playing guitar, mandolin and piano. Since age 11, he has performed regularly at
open mics in Fairfax
including BookBeat and The Sleeping Lady. He has won Best Original Song and Best
Performance at recent West Coast Songwriters Competitions and has been a
featured performer at Sweetwater Station, Starry Plough, and Country Joe
McDonald's Music Hall. Guitarist Stevie Coyle says, "He's got an innate
sense of music. And not just melody. The kid writes delicious, angular chord
sequences and delightfully abstract lyrics as well." Robin Williams has
compared him to a young Bob Dylan, and Narada Michael Walden has likened him to
a young Sting. Matt is currently at work on his first CD of original songs. Teddy
Breck, age 12, of Kentfield always seemed to have a guitar in his hands ever
since he was a toddler. If wasn't a ukulele, it was a cardboard guitar.
Surrounded by music in his family with multi-generations holding jam sessions
at family get-togethers, music is just part of his being. By five he was taking
guitar lessons and jamming with Tim Cain.
Mature beyond his years, Teddy says music is a problem solver, soother
and healer. But most importantly, it is something he loves. "We (kids) just
need to keep listening to music and share our music. Music makes a difference."
