Village to Study Safe Routes to School
Mayor Flinn and the Village Council voted to develop a Safe Route to School study to be funded by a $40,000 grant from the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) of Miami-Dade County. The full cost of the study is $50,000; the Village is committed to funding the additional $10,000 match from the Village's Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust (CITT) revenue account. Safe Routes to School is a national program that was developed to encourage children to walk and bicycle to school... Read more. Other actions at Monday's Council meeting include:
  • Council approved, on first-reading, an ordinance that would extend domestic-partner benefits to the 35 full-time employees presently receiving insurance benefits. See The Miami Herald for more.
  • Also on first reading, a "green" ordinance was passed that would provide requirements and incentives for sustainable building design and construction in the Village.
  • The Village will work with the County to co-designate a section of SW 168 St. "Panther Parkway" in honor of Perrine Elementary School.
  • Residents Henry Clifford and John DuBois were re-appointed to the Village's Tree Board for two more years.

Historic-Homes Tour Rolls Into Action at Annual Village Picnic
It's a little known fact that many cultures have visited the South-Dade area for more than 10,000 years, thanks to a geologic formation called the Atlantic Coastal Ridge. And did you know that the Town of Cutler, founded just before the turn of the 20th century on what is now the Deering Estate, was abandoned when Flagler's railroad bypassed it entirely? You will have an opportunity to learn about these facts, and more by visiting the Historic Preservation Advisory Board's tent at the Village's Annual Celebration Picnic, March 6, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Activities will include the second annual Palmetto Bay Historic Home Bus Tour, via Village I-Bus. The guided tour will feature a short history of our area, an explanation why this area was so important to the development of South Florida, and a tour of many significant historic properties and sites. Based on demand, two one-hour trips may be offered with seating limited to 25 people per bus trip. So, if you wish to join the tour, reservations are strongly recommended. For information, contact Jian Santana via e-mail or call 305-259-1260.
