Village Acts to Aid Haiti Relief Effort
Three locations officially designated
Mayor Flinn announces that Palmetto Bay Village Hall/Police Dept., the Palmetto Bay Branch Library at Ludovici Park, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 50 have been designated as official drop-off points for "essential items" being collected in Miami-Dade County's Haiti relief effort. The Village Hall & Policing Unit is open weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the Library is open Mon., Thurs. - Sat. 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Tues. and Wed. 11:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. (closed Sundays). While the media is broadcasting terrible scenes of devastation, conditions continue to deteriorate and all types of donations are urgently needed. There are literally thousands of collection drives and efforts taking place in municipalities all across South Florida, at our schools, places of worship, and in the workplace. Your Village will continue to provide information as it is provided by Miami-Dade County, including today's summary by the South Dade Office of the Miami-Dade County Mayor. Going forward, please visit the Village website for County updates. (Also see the American Red Cross site for information.) |
Arbor Day at Ludovici Park Draws Record Crowd to 3rd Annual Event
Alexander Montessori pre-schoolers helped celebrate Arbor Day, Jan. 15, by planting several trees in the Village's new Butterfly Garden at Ludovici Park. Local artist Xavier Cortado also unveiled his unique eco-art "Reclamation Project" before more than 50 residents attending the event. Palmetto Bay has celebrated Arbor Day since 2008, part of its commitment as a Tree City USA community. The Village's new Garden Club, which coordinated planting of the Butterfly Garden, and members of the Tree Board also took part in the celebration. See the Photo Gallery and the entire story on the Village website. Also see coverage in The Miami Herald. |
Parks & Rec Unveils New Programs for Village Seniors On-the-Go
A new electronic newsletter was launched last week, called Seniors On-the-Go, for the Village's mature-resident population. It features the introduction of a new series of classes and seminars designed for the active seniors in our community. Programs are offered by Baptist Health South Florida and fill up quickly -- so, if you are interested in learning more, send your request to the Village to subscribe to the new senior e-news, or call 305-259-1234. Historic Places ...
Perrine Elementary Offers One of County's Longest Histories
Although it looks quite disconnected from the past with its shiny building on Richmond Drive, Perrine Elementary School boasts one of the longest histories in the county. In 1900, Richmond Drive consisted of logs laid side by side. Where this bumpy ride met the bay, the area we now know as the Deering Estate, there was situated a one-room structure that served as a community school and church...
For the rest of the story, visit the Village's Historic Places webpage. (Pictured above is Principal Albert Isaac poses with Perrine Elementary's Class of 1914-15.) | |
