Greetings from your E$C Coordinators, Diana Pangestu & Max Joel:
This April, we celebrate Earth Day, or as we like to call it, Earth Month.
This month offers you a new seminar for commercial building owners where we explain NYC's new green building legislation and NYSERDA Incentives. We also follow a new case study project to offer you insight into what's involved in an energy efficiency retrofit.
The Green from the Inside Out series continues for residential buildings. And three
exciting conferences you won't want to miss out on this month are the
ASHRAE Existing Buildings Conference, April 19-20, the Building Green
Expo, April 20, and Staten Island Home Show, April 24-25. Details in the Events
section.
For small businesses, check out our comprehensive list of the various programs and grants offered for energy efficiency audits and upgrades. An event hosted by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Green Business Energy Subcommittee helps explain some of these programs in more depth. Check it out below!
And the New York Great Appliance Swap Out has $5 million left to
give back in the form of rebates. If you are looking to change your
appliances, now is a great time.

Green Within Reach: Bringing Together State, City, and Local Leaders to Disseminate the New Green Building Legislation and NYSERDA Incentives for Lower Manhattan Commercial Building Owners
|
The Greener Greater Buildings Plan, New York City's green building legislation, was passed in December 9, 2009. Solar One, in partnership with NYSERDA, the City of New York, the Alliance for Downtown New York, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the New York Building Congress, bring to you the first of a series of workshops to better explain this legislation to the audience it affects - commercial building owners and managers. In addition to legislation, we will present an overview of the NYSERDA incentives available to commercial buildings that will help offset the costs for energy efficiency upgrades.
Green Within Reach, hosted by the Alliance for Downtown New York, will take place on April 15 from 8:00-11:00am at The New York Academy of Sciences. While we expect a large amount of interest, we especially invite those who are decision-makers over commercial buildings in the downtown area to attend.

The 14th Street Y Offers Transparency Into the Process and Costs of Going Green - Month One
|
This month, Solar One brings to you all an exciting case study project where we can follow a space as they begin their journey into "going green". Solar One met with the 14th Street Y in February through their participation in the
Jewish Greening Fellowship. The
fellowship (http://www.isabellafreedman.org/environment/greening), a program of
the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center, provides support and training to
20 Jewish community centers and camps in the New York area in greening their facilities, operations and programs. The 14th Street Y
has been committed to taking steps to make their community center a
more vibrant healthier asset to the community.
Solar One met with Wendy Seligson, Associate Executive Director for Operations, Stephen Hazan Arnoff, Executive Director, and Conrad Landais, Superintendent. After a few meetings, the 14th Street Y agreed to become a case study, to help others understand how they are moving their project forward, the lessons they learn, and the benefits they gain as they incorporate sustainability and energy efficiency into their community center. Through this case study, we will show you their current systems, the audit and construction process, the new installed systems, any education initiatives adopted, and how all this gets financed. Solar One will be documenting the process and will feature updates and photos on a new monthly blog on our website - to be created. Stay tuned!
About the 14th Street Y The 14th Street Y, a Jewish community center, is a vital neighborhood resource that welcomes people of all backgrounds. We provide a variety of programs with a distinctive downtown point of view, emphasizing excellence, innovation, creativity, and a questioning spirit. We are inspired by Tikkun Olam, or repair of the world, in all that we do: a value that represents and renews the vitality of our Jewish heritage and its place in our diverse and vibrant community. The 14th Street Y is part of a network of 80 programs at 30 sites provided by The Educational Alliance for all residents of Downtown Manhattan.UJA-Federation of New YorkThe UJA-Federation of New York provides critical support to The Educational Alliance and the Alliance's 14th Street Y through general operating funding and program grants, volunteers, training, and advocacy.
The Jewish Greening Fellowship is generously funded by UJA-Federation

advances, coupled with exemptions from environmental regulations, will impact
local communities ranging from rural areas in the Catskills to farms in
Pennsylvania and the water supply in Texas. FREE.

Energy Tip!
|
Clothes Washers
*Do your laundry during off-peak
hours, after 6:30 p.m. and before 9:30 a.m., and hang your clothes outdoors in
the summer.
*When doing your laundry, use a cold
water wash on full loads.
*Clean the lint trap regularly to
keep it running more efficiently and make sure the exhaust isn't blocked.
*Horizontal-axis clothes washers
(front loaders) are far more gentle and effective on your clothes, and are much
more energy efficient when compared to traditional clothes washers.
