HIGHLAND CABIN
Every building found at Covenant Hills has a legacy all its own. Highland Cabin is such a place. Initially built and inhabited for the first time during the 2010 camping season, with finishing touches completed in time for the 2011 camping season, the cabin offers a unique style of family group living to the program. The original plan was to build a cabin to replace Canvas Castles. While the tent-style-cabin-on-a-platform was unique, its popularity and usefulness proved limited. The Vigne family accepted the challenge of a new cabin and built it with love to honor the memory of Pastor Bill Vigne and Taylor Vigne. Bill was a graduate of the Yale Divinity School in New Haven, CT. Growing up in Bridgeport, CT, his mother, a single parent after the death of her husband when Bill was less than 1 year old, worked in the Smith-Wesson plant manufacturing bullets. Bill's life dream was to be a missionary medical doctor. He attended the Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH where he met the woman he would share the rest of his life, Jean. He became a member of the Troy Annual Conference in 1956. His first charge was Waitesfield / Warren in the 1950s from which he would serve charges throughout the Troy Conference such as Burlington, VT, East Greenbush, NY, Lake Placid, NY and Delmar, NY. He also spent an internship in Texas for a year leaning to council cancer patients. While he was in Lake Placid, he became very involved in the preparation of the 1980 Winter Olympics, accepting the charge of Chairman of the Religious Affairs Committee. This committee ministered to the needs of the athletes and staff of the Olympic program. A unique ministry, this committee served as a chaplain for an international community. A well respected member or the clergy, Bill inspired future clergy and ministered to his fellow clergy as well. He also served his community by being a first responder to his local fire department. In a diving drill with the department, Bill's ear drum was ruptured causing him to lose the use of one ear. Highland Cabin, designed by Jeff Vigne with technical support provided by John Thompson, was completed in a matter of months prior to the opening of a new camp season. After Covenant Hills provided the site, the Vigne family and friends went to work. In one long weekend, the walls were put in place and trusses up with one side decked the first day. The second day the porch roof was completed and on the third day, the interior of the cabin was made acceptable for habitation of campers. Since that time, the interior walls have been completed and steps have been put in place. The cabin offers a unique living arrangement where there are sleeping quarters on each end of the cabin which are joined by a central living area. The name, Highland, was chosen by the family to recall the rich Scottish heritage of Bill (Graham, Bill's middle name comes from his mother's maiden name as she was a 1st generation immigrant). The name of the cabin is truly enhanced by the magnificent and graceful view of the Vermont Green Mountains from the porch.
A building of the magnitude of Highland is a testimony to the love a family shares with each other. Ephesians 6 tells us that to honor our family is the first commandment with a promise. It is with the love of the Vigne family that such honor is demonstrated. The original design as shown in the sketch called for an enclosed deck but was changed due to the wonderful mountain view and to provide easier access in and out of the cabin as well.
Enjoy watching the building of Highland HERE as you listen to "The Rising" by Bruce Springsteen.
