Prophetic 1995 Student Internet PSA

In 1995, a group of students from Ray Bjork School in Helena, Montana, created a Public Service Announcement with the guidance of Cindy Gaffney on the topic, "Why should I be on the Internet?" You may have already watched the video on YouTube which seems to be making the rounds. With the fast pace of tech changes, it's amazing to see what they said 17 years ago rings true today.

Since you're reading this eZine, I expect you're like these students who love technology. Here's the back story and it's not surprising to see what some of them are doing today. Keep doing your good work. Thank you for your support of PCATT.

All the best,

One of Our Favorite Topics

Hacker

It's been a while since we've mentioned one of our favorite topics (no, it's not IPv6 this time; it's security). If anything, the subject has become broader with more areas of concern. Here's a good security summary from Roger A. Grimes for InfoWorld and a reminder of how far malware has advanced. Remember...PCATT offers Security+, CCNA Security, and CISSP training on a regular basis.

Password Managers

While on the topic, SecurityCoverage reports

password breaches have increased 300% over 2011. No surprise there. Here is a list of the top 5 password managers as reviewed by BYTE. If you're using a password manager that you especially like, please let us know so we can share it.

An alternative to storing passwords, you can use software like Secure Password which generates the same secure password based on the information you enter into a Web browser. Nothing is stored or transmitted. An effective way of implementing this, as mentioned by labnol.org is to develop a system for the site name, such as "homeemail" or "workemail"

Using Tech for Military Benefits

Wolfgang Ward is a combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient and founder of MilitaryBenefitsReport.com  It's a free resource for the military community, including spouses and veterans, to get detailed and personalized information about their military benefits.       "MilitaryBenefitsReport.com is the work of genius. Having the ability to mass personalize custom-tailored benefits based on the eligibility criteria and location of the soldier, with tens of thousands of individual programs available nationwide, has never been done before on this scale," says Justin Sherman, Personnel Service NCO. We hope our friends and clients in the military community find this helpful.

Virtualization, A Hot Technology

"Why virtualize? In a nutshell, "Virtualizing your IT   vmware blades  infrastructure lets you reduce IT costs while increasing the efficiency, utilization, and flexibility of your existing assets."

If you're interested in training, VMware has a 5-day course taught at PCATT, VMware vSphere: Optimize and Scale [v5], which is not a regular offering in Hawai'i. It runs from September 10 through 14. The regular price is $4125. Contact Joe Reinhold (877 735-1355) at VMware Education for a 30% discount.

PCATT through the VMware Academy has a few seats left in VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [v5] which starts on September 19 and ends on November 21. The course has 15 meetings on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Price is $1675. Contact PCATT @ 808 845-9296 to register.

"12 IT Certifications That Deliver Career Advancement"
cio logo

Despite the catchy title and the list of certifications, the value of this article lies in the questions the writer suggests you ask yourself about your career goals and objectives. The point is to select certifications that mean something to you because that's what matters. For folks already in technical fields with good jobs, it's interesting to note the reasons why people pursued certifications.

Within this article written by Richard Hein for CIO is a useful link, GoCertify. The site is marketed as a Certification Advisor. They claim to help you select the "perfect certification to meet your career needs". The tool is a guide and not the final word.

*A bit of self-promotion: PCATT can help you prepare for 7 out of the 12 certification categories listed.

Cisco Certification Discounts

Good news! Cisco has expanded their certification exam discount program for students and instructors. Participants in Cisco Academy training receive a discount voucher if they score a 75% or higher on their first attempt of the final test in the CCNA Exploration 4 course. This is a 58% discount. Very nice.

What's a Course and What's a Class?

Dallas and IPv6
What's the difference between a course and a class? Classes are the individual meetings that make up a course. How's that for a bit of trivia?
At this link are PCATT courses scheduled for the month of September. We hope you find a course that's just right for you. And remember: All PCATT courses have class. (Sorry, couldn't resist the bad pun)

And Finally...

mindset

It's August which means the latest Mindset List has been published by Beloit College. It was originally developed to help faculty relate to traditional age college students by describing the view of the incoming college freshman class. Today, it's used widely by employers, the military, and others. The class of 2016 is made of digital natives. They watch more YouTube than TV, they've never seen a paper airplane ticket, and they listen to the radio on anything but a radio. Women have always handled international relations in the State Department and have always piloted space shuttles. Hopefully, the 75 items on the Mindset List provide you with insight on working collaboratively with this and other generations.
